Subject: Where do you archive your photos?
We (especially Mr Booty) take a lot of photos but do not have a systematic way of archiving them, so if a laptop dies, those albums go away. I know there are some on-line ways as well as external hard drives, Zip drives, etc. we just returned from 3 weeks in Thailand I think it is time to be systematic about this. How do you archive photos?

I have a 1TB external hard drive that I started to use just for that purpose.  Plus I use photobucket and flickr for some of my photos also.

I may be old school, but althought. Love my external HD, a magnetic spinning drive can fail. I put dvd backups in our bank safe deposit box as well. That is for family photos.

I've got four RAID 5 servers going and everything I've got is on at least two of them at any time, plus the laptop or desktop I uploaded it from.

I usually keep them on two different external drives and they are in a directory by the event or the date.  Also backups on CD's and/or DVD's.

I also do the same thing for the pictures I take at work for different things.

External hard drives are cheap at Costco, but they only help if you remember to backup your computer.

Plus I keep pictures on Snapfish.

Unless you are backing up online you do not have a good backup system. External drives are good in case your main drive dies but you MUST back them up online via many of the available services. I personally use Backblaze. Unlimited backup for $55 a year.

A house fire or technical issues with an external can erase everything in a heartbeat.  I second online back ups.  I use Carbonite, and it seems to work well so far.

You install a small piece of software on your machine.  You tell it what to backup (which folders).  In the background it uploads all of your files to an offline server.  As you add files or remove them it updates the online file store.  If you ever have a HD crash you can simply restore all your files from this online server.  Some even offer to send you all your files on a external HD.

There are all sorts of options such as file versioning and such but at the very least you need an actively updating online storage program.
