What is the biggest training/racing lesson you learned in 2012?

Mine was running a 50 mile trail ultra in minimal shoes. I did all my build up in New Balance Minimus line including a 50k. But throw rocks into the terrain on race day and the recovery for my feet from not having any cushioning took over 5 weeks to get over the bruised feeling!

Bye bye minimalist, hello Altras!

After 3 years of doing the Boise 70.3 in less than optimal conditions, I learned in 2012 that I can train hard for this race, opt out at the swim start d/t temps in the 30's-40's, wind, rain, blowing snow out on the bike route, and feel good about my decision!..............Tom

Must avoid cycling past my new neighbors German Shepard that likes to chase moving objects. Once was silly twice nearly had to change my De Sotos. Learned my lesson now!

Okay actually two lessons:

Murphy's law still applies--whatever can go wrong, will. I seem to be the test case of that.

Don't enter a tri in the Pacific Northwest in June unless I want to freeze to death on the swim/have bike course cut on account of snow and ice/get hailed on during the run. You know a race sucks when the first thing you ask for at the finish is your down jacket!

Sorry, had to laugh at your bad luck.  Generally the problem with that race is heat (well, water is always cold).  You got a bad year for sure

Dude, Hoka one one!

In my lightweights, beat the snot out of my feet on the super sprint and first olympic of the Ohio triple T... second olympic and 70.3 were in the hoka's.

2012 lesson:
if your preparation has been consistent, you can likely go faster than you think.

Listen to your body when it needs rest.  I over did it last May and ended up injured and ruining my season.  I was able to run less than 100 miles from May through October, with zero in September and 8 in October.

We have a long tri season here in Florida, ease up a bit in July and August, will minimize the burnout in October.

Anything can happen on race day so don't skip training because of less than perfect conditions.

Just because you had a really good time on your first HIM in June, don't go out and sign up for another in September. Quick road to burnout. I think I have finally turned the corner 6 months later.

I've learned that when doubt creeps in.....trust in you're training.

(assumes you've prepared well)

If you have a powermeter on your bike and choose to ignore it in a HIM because youre having fun doing intervals with guys that are faster than you, then your run will SUCK and it starts about mile 3!!

Hoka's are the stuff.  Legs feel so much better after distance.  Don't even get me started about knees and back.  Won't go back.

Lesson learned in 2012 (my inaugural season) Don't underestimate the swim.  Swim, then swim some more, and then swim until you think you have swam enough....and then go for a swim.

Since I did not race in 2012 this is what I learned:

That with no swim training and very minimal bike training, I get slower on the run even if my run volume goes up a little bit.  Perhaps because of a few unwanted pounds being obtained.

That even though I don't miss swimming one bit, I do miss racing and for that reason I need to figure a way to get back into the water.  Triathlon - can't live with it, can't live without it.

When things start to feel really really good and your workouts start to feel like a piece of Cake, then  you are probably about to injure yourself. At least that's how it seems with me.

Strength training in key areas for me.  It knocked me off running for several months.  You need to do some every week!
