Member 33 Cape Cod | Subject: How much do you weigh? Hi All, Sorry to get personal, lol, but I am ran in a road race yesterday and I am a lot lighter now than I have been in a long while (5'7" at 153lbs). As a result, my times were significantly better than they have been in a loooong time! My training is pretty standard, some speed work, tempo runs and long runs each week and it got me thinking that my weight is probably one of the most important considerations in determining how fast I will be able to race at. I read online last night where Amby Burfoot wrote that for every one pound of weight lost, he estimates a 2 second per mile increase in speed. Have any of you found this to be the case as well or do you think it's overrated? And what is your best weight for your height? |

Subject: RE: How much do you weigh? In my case totally over rated. I've always been thin and I'm as slow as a snail. Has nothing to do with my weight and everything to do with the limited amount of run training I can accomplish due to constant issues with my feet. Congratulations though! |

Thanks for your reply trigal! I guess I should have written that "faster" is relative of course, faster for me is still solidly in the middle of the pack, lol! But all of running and racing and competing is me against myself, am I improving for me? If competition were me against others I wouldn't be racing very long! LOL! |

Once race season rolls around, I drop to about 150, and will try to be at about 145-143 by USAG Nationals. This will take me from 8:00-8:30 miles to 7:30-8:00 miles. It is significant. Try carrying around a backpack full of rocks and see if you don't run faster without the pack. |

New user 560 Key West | Subject: RE: How much do you weigh? I agree that all things being equal you want to be the lightest you can be and still be the strongest. In other words, when you start losing fitness or strength because you have gotten too thin, then you lose any size advantage. I am fairly small 5'4" and am now about 113 to 115 (113 today just two days after a HIM) but was my fastest when I was 104. I was also a lot younger but still not a kid. I am not sure I could even get down to 104 now and I realize I was VERY thin, but I do miss the speed. I have slowed quit a bit but don't totally attribute that to weight. |

Congratulations on your accomplishment, talk about life changing!!! Interesting replies. I was told by an accomplished marathoner awhile back that if I wanted to get faster, dropping weight was going to be a huge factor. I ran Marine Corps in '09 at 185, hopefully this year (if I get in) I can run it four years later and a lot lighter to put his assertion to the (very unscientific) test! |

With my build, realistically I'll never get below 220-230, although I would like to be in the 230's this race year. I despise the BMI charts that say I should weigh 180-190 and that I'm practically morbidly obese sitting at 240-250, however I'd be a "healthy" weight if I was 160. 80 lbs? Insane. |

Walkers pass me when I run, joggers pass me when I bike. I think if the pf in the feet and knee issues would ever go away for good, I might be able to fix that, but for now, Ill just enjoy being outside. |

Weighed in at 69kg at IMWA 12/9 and lost a couple over the holidays. Would be ecstatic to be 65kg at IMNZ in 6.5 weeks! 65, 6.5 ... I like that. Although speed gains are relative to your height, weight & weight lost relative to that, and body composition ... absolutely, it is a straight-up causation. Even at my heaviest (Well over 260lb probably closer to 300) I could already feel and see a huge difference on my feet (not that I ran, but walked ... ) with just 10lb lost. |

Extreme Veteran 415 | Subject: RE: How much do you weigh? At my heaviest, 262lb at 6' 3". Started tris/training as a weightloss solution and got hooked. Currently at 192lb. Would love to tinker around 180 to 185lbs. For me personally, keeping and losing weight has been all about my runnning aspect. I have had issues with stress fx, foot pain, ect. I am doing better at avoiding those issues, by weighing less, training properly, and NOT being afraid to day an extra day off or shorter a workout if needed. I listen to my body instead of being so focused on following a training plan. I also get some looks at times, because I have such broad shoulders. Besides being thinner, folks have asked me if I was a tight-end playing football in college, because of my height and broad shoulder range. I have noticed gains in my race day and training speeds when it comes to running. More importantly, I have noticed my reoccurrence of injury is also far less. Edited by tigers75 2013-01-14 7:38 AM |

I would like to get down to 176 lbs @ 6' tall, last season I was hovering between 181 to 184, right now I am all over the firgging place from a high of 189 3 week ago to a low of 183, last nights weigh in was 187 so I am bouncing around like a ping pong ball, Not running because of a miniscle tear is probably part of the issue as I am not burning as many calories even though I am making up the lost runs in the pool it just not the same calorie burn and I have not alterd my eating habits to compensate. But realisticly I felt good last season at 181/182 so If I could get back there by april I would be Ok with that. |

Couldn't agree more! Currently 6'5" and 263. Trying to get down to 230 by NOLA 70.3 in late April. Have been as low as 223 a few years back and did not look or feel good. Couldn't imagine what I'd look like at 6'5" and 180 lbs. However, I do know that I am faster at the lighter weight. I'll look up some of my race and training logs and see what time difference it makes. |

I'm 5'6" and about a buck forty-five now, but I know I've gained some weight from the holidays. I would say my race weight is maybe 139-140 and it's amazing to me how much a difference that makes (could be in my head....oh well....whatever works!). My upper body tends to be a little wider due to weights. |

Expert 839 Central Mass | Subject: RE: How much do you weigh? I'd like to think 2 sec/lb is true. But I have no data to back it up - I let my run fitness lag too much.
6' - 158 lbs this morning. 150lbs race weight. The only data I have is that at 138 lbs, I could run 18:00 5k, and at 150, I can run a 20:45 5k - the rule of thumb says 74.4 seconds over a 5k for 12 lbs. I saw 165 seconds. HOWEVER the 18:00 was at 17 in much better run shape and the 20:45 was at 33 with appendicitis (still the best time since HS) |

99 | Subject: RE: How much do you weigh? At my heaviest, I was 205-210 lbs. 6'-1 or 6'-2" really probably 6'-1 1/2". I was playing rugby then so fast wasn't the goal. I was sure as hell mean on the pitch at that weight though. Now that I have moved on to tri's, I hover between 180-185 lbs. In between the two sports when I wasn't doing anything for abut 3-4 years, I was 190-195 lbs.
For me it is function of fitness more than weight. When I was being fat and lazy at 195lbs, I was definitely slower than when I was in my prime playing rugby and at 210 lbs. However, now I am 185 lbs. and training for tri's, I am way faster than I was playing rugby. It's just a matter of what I am training for. Ideally, I want to be 190 lbs. and run sub 20 min./5k consistently. Before the knee issues I was getting close. The last couple months of no running has set me back a little. Even if I was/am faster at 180 lbs. or less, I don't feel good at that weight and I don't feel strong at that weight. My fastest runs where when I was in the marine corps and I was right at 190 lbs. I was strong and fast and extremely fit. I was also 19/20 years old! I do miss being in that kind of shape, not sure I will ever get completely back to being that fit. |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: How much do you weigh? I’m 5’10”. I am at my best when I’m around 175. I have fewer injury problems, which means I can run more consistently, which means I can get faster. I got really heavy after I finished my HIM and essentially took the last six months off—I got up to around 185. I’m working my way back down and hope to be back in the 170’s by Spring. I definitely am faster when I weigh less, but I don't know whether it's a function of less mass or fewer injuries/better training. I'd guess it's the latter by 75/25 at least. |
