I am considering doing this crazy race, but am not totally sure I can be ready.  Also, it looks quite intimidating.  I am wondering how quickly this race sells out.  Will all the spots be gone tomorrow afternoon or will it be open for a couple of weeks?  I am doing a half marathon in February and plan to use that as a guide to where I am in my training and would like to make my decision then.  So, for anyone who has signed up in the past could you tell me how quickly it fills?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't have the answers, but I was thinking about signing up for the shorter option.  I actually love to bike on hills, so it looks like fun.  Have you watched the videos from the "wall"?  Crazy.

Savageman will sell out, but probably not still very late Spring or early Summer.

Savageman stands head and shoulders above any other triathlon I've done.....both in terms of the overall race experience and the sense of satisfaction you get when you complete the race. If I lived anywhere within a days drive, this race would be on my calendar every year!

It usually sells out by late summer, though I think last year was the first time it didn't sell out (don't quote me on that). It's probably my favorite race I've ever done, but I would only recommend it for those who can ride on hills.  Calling is challenging is an understatement, IMO.

The SM 30 is tough, but really not too bad.

Thank you for the info regarding sign-ups.  I will wait and see how the half goes.  I definitely understand it is a hilly course and will train accordingly.  I have a century in early August that has 12,000 ft of climbing so I think that will help.  I also have lots of opportunity for climbing where I live in Virginia.  From their website, it looks like they have a 3 day camp in July.  If that is true I may do that as I am only 3 hours away.

I would still love to hear reports from the race.

Mike

Yep. Made it up in 2010, but failed in 2011. To the OP, there are lots of race reports on this site, including two from me.

Temperature could be an issue. That is cold temperature. One year the air temperature was in the upper 30's which means the need to bring cold weather biking equipment to the event. Don't kid yourself, this is one of the world's toughest 70.3 (or so) triathlon.

I have noticed that Deep Creek Lake is a bit chilly.  Does that mean you shouldn't try it without a wetsuit?

The timing on this thread is funny.  I live in the area, and just this weekend, I was telling my husband that I wanted to try it.

Here is my RR from 2011: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=270154

As others said, this is an epic race.  If you have the opportunity to do it, it's not to be missed.

The field is definitely stronger than most other races.  I'm not a weak swimmer and had a great swim that day, but still barely cracked the top third of my AG.

If you think you're a fast BA, this race will definitely provide some perspective, owing both to the difficulty of the course and the abilities of the abilities of the average participant.

Another thing about this race is that everyone talks about the difficulty of the bike course, but the run course is no joke either.

Definitely don't think I am a BA racer.  I am very much a MOP AG racer who only found the AG podium one time last year.  This would truly be to see if I can do it and would be a long event.  I have great opportunity where I live to ride some tough hills and have found ascents comparable to Savage Man with the exception of "The Wall", which I will probably drive up and do before the race.  Thanks for posting your race review, I am off to read it now and have already read several.  It seems like there is a chance to be much colder than I was thinking it would be.

I definitely don't think I am a fast BA.  I know I am a 40 year old novice.  Still, the race is convenient, and I do like hills and a challenge.  I have 9 months to condition for it, so I think I am going to do it.  It just sounds like I need to understand that I might be DFL.

I don't want to speak for him, but I think what TriMyBest was trying to say is that there is a fair number of people who race Savageman who think they are pretty tough - multiple Ironmen, podium finishes, etc. and that course often humbles them. Some of them even come home with scratched bikes after falling on the wall.

My previous AG, Male 30 to 34, (I aged up Jan 1) is particularly prone to this kind of behavior.

It is definitely a do-able race with the proper training.

Yes, you're right.  That statement wasn't directed at anyone.  Just a way of expressing how this race is different from a lot of other races, both in course difficulty and the depth of the field.

Great race report. Mine may be similar. Hopefully I climb the wall successfully (planning to pull down a side street to catch my breath) and get my brick.

You should totally do this race. It is challenging and a very rewarding experience. The race doesn't sell out as quickly. I am waiting to after Ironman Lake Placid this weekend to sign up. Please read the race reports on this race. By the way the Olympic distance will sell out first. There is no brick for the Olympic distance. You need to do the 70.0, clear the "Wall" without touching ground and finish the race to earn a brick.

Mike, that ain't allowed. Doesn't mean you wouldn't get away with it, but there is a lot of video evidence shot from the top so I wouldn't bank on you pulling it off either...... You've got to ride straight from top to bottom in one fell swoop and one attempt at it only in order to get your brick. Take it as easy as you can on those 4 initial blocks, but no pulling off into side streets to rest.

I am starting to get very nervous about signing up for this for my first olympic distance race. When I did the Garrett County Gran Fondo on some of the same roads earlier this summer, I ran out of gears. I think I might need a trip to the bike shop to move up to a 28 tooth gear on the back. It doesn't look like Bowman hill is on the course, and that was the one that made me walk in the gran fondo. That swim looks cold, too. I have ordered a wetsuit rental for the race, but don't know if I will have time to test it out before hand.

Happy, I enjoy training and racing in the hills as well, but, a 25% grade is NOT fun! It is pure survival!

Don't worry -- if you made it around the Gran Fondo alive, you'll be ok for Savageman. I had a similar worry last year. The Diabolical Double at GCGF had me begging for mercy, so I approached SM 70.0 with terror, but I had a blast. The bike is hard, but I think it's not quite as relentless as GCGF. You should be ok for the Oly.

I'd highly recommend to test out your wetsuit before race day ("nothing new on race day"). But if all else fails, you can take advantage of the relatively late start times, and get acclimated before the start of the race.

Just saw the notice about Savageman changing management and wanted to give a huge thank you to Kyle for all the blood, sweat, and tears (his and the racers) that went in to making Savageman the awesome race it is. Now I really wish I was doing it in 2013, the final year under Kyle's diabolical care and direction.

Thanks you Kyle Yost!!!!!!
