If you could live anywhere in the continental United States, where do you think would be the best place to be a triathlete?

Just wonderin'....

Right here, because here I have family, friends, a job, a place to live and a well-rounded life. Triathlon is a only a hobby that is part of that.

Right here.   Mild summers, mild winters (although this winter is cold in the lo 40s in the am), low humidity.

My midwinter training ride from Saturday

This! Great OWS, and weather you can train in pretty much year round. The only reason I would say it beats out SoCal is because their surf is cold and likely rough a good portion of the year.

Are we including xterra tri-races? That hurts FL. Although there is one in Jax.

Though I've never been there, I would have to assume southern cali would be the best place.   Florida's heat and humidity would make me cry.  Plus there are so many amazing places within driving distance of there.  Plus, the added bonus is you don't have to live in florida

There's not much to complain about living here on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  You can comfortably train outside year 'round and the relatively calm surf is great for OWS.  The most common complaint I hear is about the heat in the summer, but that just gives me incentive to get up and workout early.

That being said, I think you can make the most of where ever you live.  I grew up in Indiana and lived for a while in upstate New York (Rochester) and still managed to run outside almost all winter.

Me too.. I visited Wisconsin, my home state a few Christmas's ago and enjoyed going out running in 0 degree wearing one of those ninja face mask thingy's.

It was great for a visit.. like 1 week. Then i was done with that.

Madison, Wisconsin. That is, if you are willing to broaden you reach beyond S/B/R and into skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, cyclocross (just held nationals), speed skating (try it its friggin hard!), ski-jumping.

The endurance community here, solely in triathlon, is huge and I would say rivals other hubs such as Boulder, Austin, Tucson, San Diego. Some great coaches are in the area, as well as a handful of pros and many top elite AG'ers. Add in that you have triathlon specific stores, and a great local flavor of races (Ironman in the city, a 70.3 90 minutes away, and a REV 3 race 45 mins away), you really can't go wrong.

In all seriousness Madison is a very fitness friendly city, many commute via bikes to work every day, hundreds of miles of bike trails, bike lanes, drivers are very respectful, 3 lakes centered downtown, what else do you need in a city that is under 250,000 people?

Coastal California!  The weather is great for year round training (as noted in the picture above on Hwy 1) and there is plenty of variety in the terrain.  The ocean can be rough and cold during the winter for OWS however there are plenty of lakes and reservoirs to swim in.  As mentioned above, San Diego would be pretty good as well for all of the same reasons.

Another plus is a plethora of events.  In my area alone I'm set for 5 short distance events the season, three of which also offer long courses.  If I expanded to northern and southern California I'm sure I could find an event or two each month.

Back in the day, the hot spots were San Diego and Boulder.  One for all year training and the other for altitude.

Same reason all (many) of the PGA golfers live here- FLA baby! Moderate temps year around allow for training year around. yea, it's flat, so what. Water everywhere, great water temps most of year etc.

Living and training in the heat of FLA all year was a huge benefit to me this week at Disney Marathon. Many not used to the heat/humidity had issues. I was bred for this weather. Love it.

Active.com did an article on this recently and where I live in Central New York actually made the top 10.  I would agree there is an abundance of great riding, open water swimming and an extremely active club.

I figure any of these places must be pretty good for triathletes:

Tri-Cities, Washington
Tri-Cities, Tennessee
Tri-Cities, Michigan
Tri-Cities, Virginia
Tri-Cities, New Hampshire
Tri-Towns, Colorado
Tri-Counties, Florida

I'm sure I missed a few. ;-)

kansas, 10 degree highs in the winter, 110 degree highs in the summer, and 30 mph winds daily! No OWS around, rude obnoxious drivers, and not a hill in sight!
