I would agree there is an abundance of great riding, open water swimming and an extremely active club.

Glad to see MSP in there. Some may say the weather is a drawback, but there are plenty of pools, I have a trainer in my basement and have adequate clothing to run in subzero temps. Some trails are even plowed before the roads are. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes No votes for Hawaii??? Honolulu? Kona? Yes, I know the biking's kind of limited and some roads on Oahu can be crowded, but from my perspective (my only biking here is a 4-mile loop in an industrial park and a trainer), it's good enough. Nice OWS year-round. Not actually that hot, unless you decide to do a long run down on the beach at noon. Mornings and evenings are almost always pleasant, as are upland areas. Vibrant local sports scene. Tons of wonderful places to run, great food......I'd be off tomorrow if I could afford to! If you don't need glamor and just want to hunker down and train, my hometown of Eugene, OR isn't bad either. Best known for running but we have good pools for swim training, and lots of clean lakes for OWS in summer. The wood chip trail system (Pre's, Rexius, Amazon) is perfect for getting in miles and speedwork with low impact. When the weather is decent (roughly July through November) there are endless miles of rolling country roads with little traffic for riding. When it's ugly, you can hit the trainer; also several facilties with group Computrainer rides. Plus lots of sports-med and massage specialists due to all the world-class athletes around. New user 54 Greatest Place on Earth | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes I am in Encinitas (North San Diego County). My house is 1 mile from the ocean, 0.5 miles to the YMCA where you can find pros swimming, 1.5 miles to Nytro (tri shop) and less than a mile to the coast highway for some nice riding. In the 8 years I have lived here it has only gotten above 80 degrees about 15 times at my house. I have only had frost on the grass about 1-2 times per year. Absolutely perfect! I moved here from the western burbs of Denver (about 20 min. to Boulder) and although that area is great, I find that the atmosphere and the weather of Encinitas to be ideal for me. Life is Good! |

Extreme Veteran 856 Detroit, Michigan | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes Believe it or not, Michigan is actually not bad. You can run outside almost every day with the proper winter gear. (I am looking forward to a 30-degree run later today.) There are TONS of state parks and metro parks with miles and miles of trails. There are TONS of rivers and inland lakes -- you could do a triathlon here every weekend in the summer if you wanted. OK, you have to commit to the pool and probably bike trainer from December to March, but you're just base building anyway. =) Plus, you don't have to worry about alligators or any poisonous bugs!!!! That being said, if I had the money for a winter place in California, Phoenix, Florida, etc., my butt would be there right now. |

Pro 6191 | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes sdswriter - 2013-01-15 12:08 AM I figure any of these places must be pretty good for triathletes: Tri-Cities, Washington Tri-Cities, Tennessee Tri-Cities, Michigan Tri-Cities, Virginia Tri-Cities, New Hampshire Tri-Towns, Colorado Tri-Counties, Florida I'm sure I missed a few. ;-) Let's not forget AZ! Tucson is AMAZING for everything except OWS - great cycling (on and off road), running (on and off road), and masters swim team. AND we get close to 300 days of sunshine per year |

I believe I will be staying put in central New Jersey for the time being, but when the boyfriend asked me where would I move if we could move anywhere I panicked, thinking, "Oh no, what about triathlon training?!?!?" Expert 962 | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes I would say right here in the Texas hill country. Winter lasts about 2 months, with only really about two weeks total that are unbearable for outdoor training. We have lakes for OWS and I'm only about 2 hours from the coast if I'm looking for more of a challenge. Plenty of hills to train on. The wind can also kick up so I get some experience riding in that as well. Only thing I wish was improved was the back country road conditions. Those things could use some work. But then again when you have the most miles of pavement in the U.S. I suppose it's tough to cover 'em all. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes I'd like a place that's:
I think many places in California would fit the bill. Another place I am interested in is Albuquerque. I have never been, but it looks really great on Breaking Bad. I know San Diego, Boulder, etc, always come up. I wonder if places that do NOT come up possibly don't have good tri communities. If the training area was good, but tris weren't prevalent, that would be another problem. If there's nowhere to race, that would rule it out for me. Edited by BikerGrrrl 2013-01-16 1:41 PM |

New user 322 KY | Subject: RE: Best Place in the US for Triathletes Having lived in many places across the country for work, I have to say my favorite is upstate NY in the summer. The biking is fantastic, there are stunning lakes to swim (with some wonderfully organized OWS practices) and first class running (especially in the Saratoga Springs area). I did like Florida (both gulf coast and Atlantic side) but missed the hills. I grew up in the twin cities (MN) and love it in the summer, but the winters are definitely not conducive to triathlon training! |
