Does it seem poor judgement to plan a marathon one month after my first ironman? Am I asking for injury? Would a half marathon be better???? How long after an ironman should a person rest?

Thanks,
Timmer

It has been done but I wouldn't do it. I have been able to run comfortably 1 week after an IM but felt fatigued and it was over a month until I felt mostly normal. Half with low expectations would be better for me.

Good luck

Do you recover well and fast?

I'd never do it. 3-4 weeks post IM many of us are still not recovered but think we are.

I agree with this!  Finished CdA in June, took it easy for 3 weeks, felt great and thought I'd start ramping up for a Sept. marathon.  Had a highly unusual number of minor injuries (for me) and called it off.

I agree with above.  It just depends how fast you recover.  Personally, I feel fine 48 hours after an Ironman.

After Ironman Florida in 2009, I did the Thunder Road marathon about a month and a half later and PR'd.  But again, I felt fine after the IM.  I took one recovery week and then got back on a heavy running only routine.

My advice would be to make the call after you complete the IM.  Listen to your body.

My first IM was in 2012, 5 weeks before the Chicago Marathon. Chicago was also my first stand alone marathon. Things went according to plan. I finished in 3:59:38, with a narrow :22 margin to my 4 hour goal! Started running a week after my IM at a slow pace, and slowly climbed to a long training run of 18 before the marathon. At said 18 mile mark of the actual marathon, I went from 8:30 pace to 8:45, then 9, then 9:15, etc... Cramped the last two miles a bit, but otherwise no problems. No injuries. It wasn't ideal, but I wanted to support my friends who were raising money for the Alzheimer's Foundation, so I did it. I was prepared to DNF if anything felt out of whack. I probably won't do it again, but it's doable as long as you have realistic goals.

Thank you for the posts. I'm doing IM-WI in Sept., and it will be my first IM. But in order to do the Lakefront Marathon, I would have to register soon, and its in October. However, after your insights and opinions, I'll wait until after the IM before doing any races, and will probably do a half marathon if I do any. I'm 42, and sure don't want any injuries. I understand everyone is different, however.

Thanks again,
Timmer

Agree, it can be done. Are you prone to injuries? If so you might not want to do it. I wanted to do a 2nd IM about 8 weeks after my first IM. When I started picking up the training 2 weeks later I felt extremely burnt out, so that is something you will have to watch out for as well. I would say if you are feeling up for it go for it, but I wouldn't set any time goals for it. You may PR though, ya never know!

It certainly can be done as many have.  No way I would do it. I recovery very quickly.  I can go out for a 8-9m run the morning after a pretty hard effort HIM.

It took me 3+ weeks before I felt even remotely back to normal after IMFL.  Like others, I had nagging aches/pains almost daily for a month.  I didn't run over 10m post IM until a good month later.  I might have been able to struggle through a marathon after a couple weeks of no running and a couple weeks of recovery runs, but no way I could have "raced" it.

I'm not sure about a marathon that far out unless you plan on doing the IM REALLY easy..... :p

I am wondering whether I can gut out an Xterra just for fun 4 weeks out from my IM

It's very individual, but I was personally surprised to find that "short, easy runs" of 3-5 miles still sucked and my heart rate was absurd until 3 weeks after IMAZ.  I thought I'd be back to "short" 10 mile long runs by then...hah!  NO way would I have been able to smartly tackle a mary at week 4.

It sounds like you made the right decision. Everyone recovers different after and IM, and there is not point in risking injury by running a marathon so soon after an IM. Enjoy IMWI, it is a great race.

I'm 8 weeks post-IM now and just starting to feel like running doesn't suck with every step. I've gotten back up to 8-9 mile long runs but I have to slow way down (at least 1:00/mile slower than I ran for my long, slow IM runs) so that I feel like I'm not dying. And I have a calf niggle I'm watching now. In general, I don't think of myself as a slow recoverer, either, but my endurance has hit a low I haven't seen in years!!

x3

I did a marathon 5(?) weeks after my first IM and I felt great after a week, had a ton of nigglers at 4 weeks, and suffered through the race.

Would I do it again?  Yep, but only because it was my wife's first marathon and I loved being part of her experience.  Of course she dropped me and left me for dead at mile 22.
