I paid the same price two years ago for far less service. All I got was Training Peaks that was supposed to be reviewed and discussed by my caoch. (It was obvious he would just send a canned training program to my email and never looked at my feedback.) I was supposed to have a weekly call, which was every three weeks, no group training, one VO2 test and that was about it.

I fired him in March and beat him at my first tri in June.

in all fairness just because he was a coach doesn't mean he has to be fast... No different than football, boxing or any other sport still pretty funny you beat him though!

I agree on both counts.  I want my clients to get faster than I am, but it is kind of funny that you received poor service then beat him.

x2...the examples are countless but Marv Levi is a perfect example ...coached the Buffalo Bills to 4 superbowl appearances and never played football at pro level.

FYI, training peaks just released their survey on coaching (all types, 650 responses).  The average price was $162/m.  You can see the results here.  I suspect that $125-175 is the most common range for triathlon coaches.  But 20-25% of them are still charging over $200.

FTR:  We charge $149-175.  I pay more than that for my coach.

...

Also coaches that have health insurance through another job or a spouse can charge less then full-time stand alone coaches.

...

I'm curious.  What does the bolded part have to do with the value of the service provided?

My point was that a full-time coach has to charge more to make a living, but you should expect a better service and possibly better qualification.

On the same note a cheaper coach that has health insurance through a spouse is not necessarily a less good coach, they just might be niece and pass their low-cost  structure on to their clients. (Meaning the "you get what you pay for" mentality might not apply here)

I will be starting working with my Triathlon Coach in May to prepare for my first HIM in October. He charges $125/month but since he is also in my Triclub, I will probably only pay $100. With that I get weekly training programs, calls/emails, monthly visits and 1 on 1 workout assistance along with nutrition help. He has coached several other club members to all distances up to IM so I feel comfortable with his price since I know what he gives his athletes for the money. I would say that dont focus solely on the price (it is a big factor) but also the kind of repoir you two have with each other and if you feel like that coach will give you the time/attention you want and motivate you the way you need.
