01gbanks - 2013-01-30 11:43 AM I too have just finished Angels and im pretty sure my legs are basically done! Legs were shaking after the last climb. I too honestly did not think it was going to be as tough as this... Ignorance is definatly bliss! Tomorrow is going to be hell as i have to get the session done before work as i need to fly back to London tomorrow. But i will prevail! 4 days to go. Bring on the Suffering!!!!

and now we are past the half way mark so we HAVE to finish

About to head downstairs, wish someone would post something super interesting so I wouldn't have to start day 6. Honestly scared.

Surprisingly, I am feeling pretty good.  My legs were dead after Fight Club but I've done the past two days at 100% and am feeling pretty fresh (well, as fresh as I could be).  I'm really not looking forward to Stage 6....

I try to have my morning workouts done by 6am. Mostly because that allows me time to walk the dog and have a fairly leisurely morning. I don't like feeling rushed. If I'm biking, it also allows my wife the use of the workout room where I do my riding should she want to use the TV we have in there for yoga, boot camp, etc. (currently requiring a good wipe down of the floor before she comes in).

I also like my "me" time on the trainer. And nobody else in the house gets up that early. I'm accustomed (spoiled) to having the room all to myself when I'm riding. That has been especially nice these past 5 days, as Sufferfest always has me grunting more and talking to myself.

So I was surprised when she walked in this morning around 5:45. Evidently, she decided not to run outside with our neighbor and was checking in to see how long I might be to determine if she could get in there.

She looked at the screen but couldn't figure out when I'd be done. The two timers didn't make sense to her (counting down the third interval and counting up the total time). And she was trying to look at things to see if she could answer her question without needing to engage me.

She couldn't.

And she looked at me with a look of "can you just let me know?"

I wanted to be helpful. I really did. But I just couldn't figure out how to explain what she was looking at ... and I couldn't do the math in my head at the time (A pretty easy equation, actually ... 55 minutes minus the count up clock). I just grunted.

Can't. Talk. Now.

She just walked away.

On Saturday I moved my trainer into our living room to do "Hell hath no fury".  I made the mistake of forgetting to get one of my big fans.  I sent one of my minions kids to go get the fan and he attempted to argue.  Big mistake.  I couldn't do much more than grunt.  I was nearly in tears.

Ouch.  Just finished stage 6.  If you think Alp de Huez is bad, wait until you're halfway through Long Scream.  I've been holding to 90% through most of these rides, and really started to fade in Long Scream.

Had a good finish, so maybe it was mental.  That was a long ride.

Just knocked out Angels.  Actually felt great.  First ride where I haven't had any mechanical issues or anything and just rode.  The last 2 minutes of the final interval was balls to the wall but it's done.  Oh stage 6.  I fear you.

Stage 6 complete! Started the suffering before work today at 5:30 AM. People who joined me in the gym around 6:30 must of thought i was a absolute nuttered working that hard in the morning. I was dripping. The Wretched was seriously tough, its fair to say im not the best climber in the work. Even The Long Scream was destroying me and I much prefer the TT style videos. I did gain my PHD in suffering though from the University of Sufferlandria which made everything seem (almost) work it. Hope everyone has as much fun with this as i did :/

Mommy.

I kept it at 100% and decided to just push for it. I went in knowing I'd need to keep the cadence high, as I've got zero mashing left in my quads. I averaged 93 cadence for both workouts.

I felt as though I came away from the Wretched having managed it very well. The Scream was going along fairly well until I had about 15 minutes left. From 10 minutes on, it was an absolute grind and I faded pretty bad.

The Wretched:
Target Power = 198
AVG Power = 196
N Power = 207

The Long Scream:
Target Power = 212
AVG Power = 203
N Power = 209

I'm calling it done. 2/3 of the way there.

Nice job guys.  I'm going to start in just a bit but I already know I can't go at it at 100%.  I started with no bike legs so you can imagine how they feel now.

Done with Stage 6:

Wretched:  Did at 95% and I actually felt good throughout

NP: 255 IF: 0.90

Long Scream: Basically went for broke on this and buried myself in the last few minutes, definitely worth it though.  I actually liked this ride better than any other one, probably just cause its a straight TT, I guess all those 2x20s are paying off.

NP: 275IF: 0.97

I'm looking forward to getting in the pool tonight. I don't care what the coach throws at me. I'm just thankful that a pool is not a bike.

Just out of curiosity, I calculated what my average target power has been over the 8 rides to date ... and what my average power has been.

Average Target = 201.5
Average Actual = 198.25

That's at 100% ... I'll take it.

Done with Stage 6....now to worry about Stage 8!!

I did both rides @ 95% and hit my targets on all of the intervals, but definitely not without some suffering!  By the time I was mid-way through The Long Scream, I started worrying that if I actually dropped my power in those couple second "rest" intervals, that I might not actually be able to force myself to come back!  My legs were burning....it became a mental challenge to keep it up when I really wanted to stop.

Only a few days left to go!  Hope everyone's hanging in there

Did Angels last night, then the back to back Wretched/Long Scream this morning, still holding 100%. Had to go deep inside for the metronome in the last 15 minutes of Long Scream, but I held that line. At this point, I got this! - I've done Revolver before and know how to gear it, stage 6 was the one I was worried about. Bring it on!

Any advice?

I have the feeling I'll be doing high cadence the rest of the way. And that my high cadence will not be as high as I'd like.

I'm coming off my rest day to do stage 6 and 7. I'm going to try to do all three work outs today so I can take another recovery day before stage 8.

How well have you been hitting the harder sections? I primarily look at what I'm doing there as opposed to the overall as those values will be more meaningful in these workouts. For this particular quote, I do understand what you're doing in looking at all of them together, but have seen this come up for individual without mention of being able to hit the hard parts. Especially for the upcoming ones, the overall average will have less meaning (not to be confused with zero meaning).

ETA: And for hitting some of these, you have to learn how to feel it. I'll vary some, but do tend to be higher up in cadence yet still within what I'm comfortable with. It might move some as I progress through the workout.

At least how I tackle it is to target the mid 90s for cadence on each interval, then hold that gear but pedal half speed on the rests, but I have to explain; I'm a heavy (190lb) rider with large legs, and it's a lot more comfortable for me to use the large gears in a slow to mid cadence than it is for me to spin in a higher cadence (100+). For me, speed and climbing intervals are in the 90s, not the 100s.

Fair question. And I knew with reporting the averages that it wouldn't be a complete picture. I've certainly faded for a few of the harder sections ... the final 15 minutes of The Long Scream, I'd estimate myself at about 90-95% of my target. I haven't completely tanked anything, though ... and I haven't really significantly inflated those averages with higher wattage during the rest intervals. A bit in spots ... but not much at all.

I use the same user name on TR. And I'm very open to criticism if you feel you want to take a look and offer your thoughts. I'm very new to training with power ... and I'm only using virtual power. You won't offend me in the slightest if you want to point out spots where you think I'm dogging it.

As a runner, I am very dialed in to what my perceived effort translates to pace and HR. I've been doing it a long time and could probably tell you, at any point of any run, where my pace and where my HR is. So I feel pretty good stating that I'm giving the workouts the effort they deserve and that I'm on par with what the workouts are asking.

My cycling HR zones are approximately 90% of my running zones. I'll average about 165 in an all-out 5k, and my max is approximately 178 (I hit 175 at the end of a January 1st 5k). I've been surprised to see how often I've hit 160 (and beyond) during the tour. That usually doesn't happen for me on the bike.

Again ... I'm very open to any constructive feedback. I really just calculated the averages to make sure I wasn't way off where TR thinks I should be.

I'm at 192lbs and have runner's legs. I have learned on the tour that I don't have a very solid sprint. I'm also not standing a lot ... I just don't perform well standing on the trainer. But I tend to approach the ride as you do ... not shifting all that much and lower the cadence into the 70s for the rest intervals. Today, on the TT, I was trying to hold in the low 100s during my fade in the final 10 - 15 minutes (I wasn't successful). That's what I would have needed to make my target. I would have lost too much power shifting to a smaller ring and decreasing the cadence.

Luckily I read this before I started Day 6 and approached The Wretched just like you did and was able to spin it out at 100%.

When I hit The Long Scream though I faded quick.  About 7 minutes in I felt it and by 15 I had to dial it down to 90% and even then I barely hung on.

Glad this one is over...
