My great-grandmother always talked about how in their generation they literally didn't buy dog food for dogs. They just fed them table scraps and potato peels and things they were about to throw out.

Then again, her dog's name was "Hooker" so maybe she was a bit out there. 

Funny.  I always laugh when people scoff that,I feed my dog (in addition to Costco brand) "people food." Before cereal companies and slaughter houses couldn't figure out what to do with their rejects, dogs ate, ahem, "people food."  Oh, and dear carcasses and poop, LOL.
