Subject: Any BTer's from Northern WI?
Gotta say, one of the toughest things about being a triathlete up in Northern WI is no clubs, no trainers, no group rides, not much of anything.  Positive thing is overall, it's a great training ground.  3,000 lakes to swim in and quiet roads to run on. We have maybe about 2 small triathlons per year north of Wausau.    That being said, is there any fellow BTer's up in this neck of the woods (Oneida/Vilas County Area)?  Looking at those couple races it appears as though there are a very small handful of local athletes but hard telling if they come here or not.  Anyone?

Not from up north, but from Wausau. They are just starting up a tri club in Wausau if you are looking for a group ride.

Sure wish there was a major triathlon in the northern wisconsin territory. Too bad there isn't one... I could see one possibly working in the Minoqua/Manitowish Waters area, if you could get a major sponsor. Would be nice to have a Half-Ironman up der!!! Ya tink so???

Travel seems to go with it living way up here......The only tri's we have north of Wausau is a Sprint/Oly in Minocqua, a sprint in Phillips and a new, very small sprint in the Springstead area which is between Mercer and Park Falls.  Last year I had to travel between 2.5 and 4 hours to do most events.  With all the lakes up here it is really the perfect place to host an event.

Sounds like fun!  Not sure if I could get down that way often enough though.  I approached the YMCA in Rhinelander to see if they could start up a club and we'll see what happens.

That's something I could be interested in, as I am in Stevens Point.

I didn't join, not sure how active they are going to be. Will probably wait a year.

Yes,I live over by Chetek,Wi and swim1/2-1mile SLOW, Bike 15miles, run 3-8miles so I'm pretty much beginner or pre begginner material. Your right though it would be nice to some Tri clubs around here.Maybe a beginning is to join your local bike club.Nice job by the way. Looked at your pictures, keep up the good work.  Dave W

I live in Chippewa Falls area, so west of you.  I don't know about you but I am ready for this snow to melt so I can get out on my bike. Last year it was 80 several times in March.  There is a sprint tri in Eau Claire that I hope to do as a prep for HIM Racine.

While I really like the rolling hills and quiet roads for biking and running does anyone else have trouble with dogs chasing them? I moved to northern WI from Madison so this was new for me.

Wife grew up in Eau Claire and I lived in Eau Claire for 5 years in the mid 90's!  I'm sooooo mentally done with winter.  I did the Eau Claire tri last year.  Swim kind of sucked.  They do it in Half Moon Lake and it's very weedy.  They mowed the weeds and some floated to the surface.  You had to push them away as you swam.  As a result, they shortened the swim course.  The bike was nice heading out south of town.  There are a couple decent hills but overall a nice ride.  The run is nice going through Carson Park.  I thought it was well run and it's fairly inexpensive.  Anything else you want to know just ask!

Ashland has a sprint race in July, it the Bay Days race.  I also see there is race in Ironwood, not sure the name of that one.  I did the Bay Days a few years ago, not a bad race.  It rained the entire time so needless to say not great conditions.

Rhinelander has a group bike ride a few days a week all summer long.  Call bikes and boards to get a time and hook up.  One night is a fast ride, averages around 22-25mph the other is not as hard at 18-22mph.  Super cool guys they know there stuff about bikes and riding, you will get some good pointers.  Only bad part is if they drop you from the draft your on your own.  They do not wait.

Rhinelander is having a short race in August, it looks to be put on by the same outfit as the Minocqua race.  This is Rhinelanders first year and from what you get from their web site its the same as Manitowish Waters.
