Subject: GPS Watch for Running and Cycling
Looking for one watch I can wear while running (want only basic features - pace, distance, time run, time of day); and while cycling (will mount on a bike, looking for current speed, avg speed, distance, time ridden, time of day).

I don't need to download to a pc, and I want it to be relatively small compared to the larger watches out there.

I've been on dcrainmaker site and see watches like the Timex Marathon, Garmin 110; each of these seem ok.

Anyone have similar (basic) needs like mine and if so what are you using and how's it been?

Thanks

Curently I have the Garmin Forerunner 405. Works great on the run, works with the GSC10 cadence / speed sensor for the bike. They sell a bar mount for it so you can easily read it on the bike too.

Works for everything except for the swim which is why I will be buying a 910 for the race season.

My question is this:  You say you don't need to upload to a pc, but do you know that you will never want to do that in the future?

I'm only asking, because some of the watches that you can use to upload don't cost a lot more than what you're describing, so spending a little more now might save you money in the long run if your needs change.

I use a Garmin FR70.  Very basic and works well for running and cycling.  It's not exactly a GPS watch, but measures running speed and distance accurately (need the footpod) and measures speed/cadence accurately.

It is also my daily wear watch. It isn't big and ugly like GPS watches.  And unlike GPS watches the battery actually lasts a year or more without charging or changing batteries.

The biking functions of the forerunner 110 are pretty minimal. Plus it doesn't show pace, just lap pace.

I have the Timex Marathon, got it for $95 and it's been reliable for me, I wear it as my everyday watch.  Like you I didn't have a need for data downloading but wish it had a HRM with it.

BTW, my wife has the Soleus 1.0, IMHO stay away for it, the user interface is messed up vs. the Timex.

I have a Soleus 1.0 that I picked up on clearance for $45 before XMas.  I see Donto's point that the interface could be improved, but seems pretty accurate and for $45 I think a good value.

I have the Soleus GPS Fit 1.0 too and love it. I wasn't lucky enough to pay $45 though. I think I paid $99 on amazon a few months back. For a decent set of extensive reviews on gps watches have a look at www.dcrainmaker.com.

Sort of depends if you want to go with GPS for time/pace or if you want to have speed sensor/foot pod.

For GPS the cheapest option is to use an app like runkeeper (assuming you have a smart phone).

The Polar RCX5 is a thin watch that does sync, but it has the option of using GPS or Foot Pod / speed sensor.  The GPS is in an arm band.

Garmin has the the 210 that I think handles some basic GPS functions and isn't too thick as well.

I have the Garmin FR60. It has HRM, a footpod and with the additional GSC10 cadence sensor, you can get bike information as well. It does not have GPS, however. I have had it for over a year and love it! With an ANT+ stick, I can subscribe to TrainerRoad and get virtual power. I bought mine on Amazon.

Just for clarification you don't need the FR60 for Trainer Road.  Just the GSC10 and the Ant+ stick.
