I did Racine last year. The swim is AWESOME. Best swim I've ever had at a 70.3. The beach was very sandy, the water was pretty calm and warm. You could see well. You basically swim out .1 mile, take a right turn and swim 1 mile down to the transition. There is a big pier which is directly in front of you so sighting was cake. I am going back this year as well.

Bike was flat, but there are some rough spots on the road. I got a flat at mile 50 (let me wheel hit a rut, my fault). Run has some short steep "hills" you can just punch up. You sort of run through the zoo which is cool I guess.

You won't be disappointed with any portion of the event.

It depends on the sand bars at the time. You don't go out very far though. Maybe 100 yds or so? I think they try to make sure you swim it, but it'd be very easy to turn in if it becomes difficult.

Last year, it was probably about 10 feet of water but you were never too far away from the shallows. You could see the bottom the whole swim.

Also did Racine last year. It was an amazing course for all three sports. Like others said the swim was really not bad. I could see all the way to the bottom most of the time. The bike was mostly flat, some rollers but nothing to bad. Run was great, the supports made it a blast to be there.

From year to year they change the distance you go "out" before swimming parallel to the shoreline.  I believe they do this based on currents and/or water temp.  The swim in general is very nice but Lake Michigan, even in July, can be a bit on the cold side.  A wetsuit is almost always needed (even for the tough guys).  I was most impressed with the clarity of the water.  When I did the race two years ago, we went out fairly far and I could see all the way to the bottom (about 15-20 feet) and it was clear as day.  It actually made for a peaceful, beautiful swim and I kept myself entertained by looking around on the lake floor trying to find something out of the ordinary.

That is really awesome about the water clarity. That makes me excited for the swim. I have never swam in Lake Michigan (I am planning to before the race) and was picturing it more green like many lakes and ponds where you can't see all the way to the bottom. That will make the swim go by a lot quicker checking everything out down there!
