Subject: Replacement for dying Garmin 305

Over the last week, after I've fully charged my Garmin 305 and turned it on, I get a warning that the battery is low.  Then, after about a half hour, it dies on me.  At first, I thought I hadn't fully connected the wires so it didn't receive the charge.  But it's done that now three times in a row.  The last time, it only lasted about 5 minutes.  So I think I may have a significant issue with the device.  Is this the way a 305 acts when it gets old and is ready to expire?  Or could there be some other explanation that can remedy the situation?

If not, any recommendations about a replacement?  I'm very happy with the 305 and don't feel or see any need to invest in a 910.  So I'm thinking maybe either a replacement 305 or a 405 would be a good idea.  I don't upload data and really only need a combination GPS/HR monitor type of gizmo.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well if the 910 is over kill why not check out getting a 310XT  right now around here a 310 XT with HR is selling for $20 dollars less then a refurbished 305, which I thought was Kinda Odd but true, Unless you have a ton of add ons for the 305 like I do the 310 would be a nice upgrade longer battery life, waterproof and both are still quite a bit  less then the 405.

My 305 started doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago.  I completely drained the battery and then recharged it.  The problem seems to have corrected itself, for now.

I also noted that even though it said low battery at the beginning of a run it would stay on as if the battery had a full charge.  You could also do a hard reset and see if that helps.

^^^this is the right solution.  try keeping the 305 in training mode and let the battery run all the way down, and then recharge.  if that doesn't work... you get to go shopping.

I know you said you don't want the 910xt, but I used it once inside while swimming laps and it was awesome.  It's like a whole new world, seeing swim data when I've gone a few seasons without it.   Anecdotally I've always known how my swim speed / efficiency changes but being able to see the data was pretty cool.

Not sure what I'll do with the info, but still.   For me, it's like the transition from running 'naked' to running with a GPS device for the first time.

Is it worth the extra $150 from the 310?  Not sure, but still is nice!

I settled for the 310xt myself.

For the life of me I couldn't justify the extra for the 910, but I LOVE the 310xt!!!

So much better battery life ( useful for the double centuries i tend to do in the summer too :p )

Same thing recently happened with my 305.  Like you, I did not want (to pay for) the additional bells and whistles that come on the newer models.  I called Garmin, and they traded out my old one for a refurished 305 for $85.  The refurbed one looks/feels like new, and they said it has a new battery in it.  I kept my HR strap, charger, etc., and just swapped out the wrist unit itself.  If it will last me another year or two, I'll be a happy camper.  They said the refurbed ones are subject to availability, and that they are having a lot of requests for them.

There is no place to have the unit serviced/battery replaced?  If anyone has one they are going to throw out because it won't hold a charge, I give you a few bucks for shipping for it.  Then I'll take it apart and see if I can find a replacement battery.  If I am successful, maybe I'll start an unauthorized Garmin Battery replacement service.

I agree with Zero, it sounds like a battery issue.

I'm with Squirt - my battery died and they said just send it back and for $79 they would replace it (plus shipping).  Can't touch a new one for near that price.  Mine actually ended up being free because I guess it was under warranty.

I tried all the battery tricks and none of them worked.  I did check out on line just figuring I'd buy a new one.  Well when I did find them they were a lot more than $79 so sending it back was a no brainier. I too didn't want to spend much for a new fangled one   Heck, I don't even use the HR monitor anymore, just pace, time and distance.

Duane, glad that worked out for you.

At least for me, replacing a 305 battery requires skills and tools that I do not possess.  Even if I cracked open the case successfully, the battery is soldered in, and a bit difficult to connect back up correctly. If you have those skills/tools, you might be onto something re: fixing them for people.

Mine also occasionally was shorting out or something.  Half-way through a ride it would just shut off, and I couldn't get it back on, eventually it would go on it i held the stop/start and reset buttons, but once i let go it would shut off again.

Happened a couple times....

I also wanted longer battery life than even a new 305 offers for my iron distance tri this summer as well as my double century bike rides etc.

My old 305 has more than paid for itself.

My wife will use it from time to time, she deosn't mind if it cuts out that much, whereas I mind a lot :p
