Pre-race routine:

Got to the race site nice and early. Was unusually calm and relaxed. Ate a little. Felt great. Until the put the bouys for the swim out. Holy cow that looked far!
Event warmup:

A very short 200m swim. Panic was beginning to set in a little about the swim. And it turns out they changed to start to a single wave, mass start. Holy cow. One guy swam the entire swim course as a warm up! What's with that.
Swim

  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was awesome. 2 years of worry and it went perfect. My navigation was off and the water was very murky but all in all I was very happy with the swim. I didn't even push it I just coasted the whole way. I came out of the water feeling great!

My first 1500m open water swim = success
What would you do differently?:

Try to sight more and swim straight.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

I took my time totally. I didn't rush. I heard JKnapman yell out "BT" from the sideline. That was funny. I was totaly freaked out that most of the bikes in my age group were still on the rack. I shouldn't be this far ahead at that point.
What would you do differently?:

Actually try to get on the bike leg faster and not doddle.

Comments:

Now this was more like it. People passing me like crazy. My odometer said I was averaging 30kph but I couldn't figure out why people were still smokin by me. Went out too hard trying to keep up and pushed to hard on the hills. i know I can do better than this.
What would you do differently?:

RIDE MY OLD GARDIN!!!

My 2003 Fuji Aloha is now officially for sale! It's too small.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Again, took my time. Was demoralized to see that every bike in my age group was back on the rack. My ENTIRE age group passed me on the bike. Except the guy that crashed and went out. Holy demoralizing. I've done 42 in 1:15 before.
What would you do differently?:

Try harder. I actually took a moment to drink a little and check out the sights.
Run
  • 1h 04m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Best 10 time ever. Just kept moving and didn't walk at all. I could have pushed harder but felt demoralized by being so far behind. I really wanted to break 3 hours. I need to do more speed work.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder
Post race
Warm down:

None. Just sat and chatted. Overall felt great!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike = slow and Run = slow

Event comments:

For my first Olympic I'm happy. The exact same course is being run Sept. 2nd. So I'm going to try and really improve over the summer and try again then. I want to do 2:45.

Next step on my journey to 1/2 IM = complete!

Congratulation on finishing your first Olympic Tri.

You had an awesome swim, I am sure you will break 3 hours next time,

2:45 you will need to work for but you can do it.

Well done

Ah so you did hear me. Right on.

I was finished my dismount bike duties early and I did see you finish. Complete with a big hug from the young ones. But that mass start must have been fun.

Congrats on a great race! I think you're time is awesome. You finished and to me (newbie) that is what counts the most. Hopefully I'll be able to do an Olympic by the end of next year. Great job!
