JZig - 2013-02-11 12:57 PM They may not have AG quslifying standards, but they definitely have a number of elite spots with an entirely different registration that are only available to athletes who qualify as an elete.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but pro spots for the events I mentioned do not have a qualifying standard.  You simply need your pro card.  Some events may only attract a pro field of 10 men and 8 women...while these "championship" events may attract 35 men and 24 women due to a bigger prize purse.  Our famous friend Lance Armstrong raced in Panama City as his first pro triathlon race.

My only point is that the events have a certain number of reserved spots for elite racers.

You are correct, all you need as a pro is an elite card. My friend is racing a few this year just to race against better competition. However, I think this is good for triathlon with a relatively shallow talent pool, these "championship" races tend to have better pro start lists, at least it is trending that way. Now why is Tremblent the NA championships? It is after the first cut-off and is P-4000 race, seems like a bailout plan, I thin it should by IMLP IMO.

I see.  My point was only that the term "championship" does not mean that qualifying times come into play...for either AGers or Pros....with of course the exception of a "true" championship race like Kona or Vegas.

ETA:  I just realized that some people (including myself) would not even consider Vegas and Kona as "true" championship races for many other reasons...but that's a totally different discussion.

Curious to know why you don't think of Vega or Kona as a championship race? Minus the few spots they give away to lottery winners. I think that qualify standards are pretty typical to make either race a championship. As in the athletes that arrive (if you count roll downs) it is watered down a bit.

I guess this thread is already derailed, but my comments were in regards to those people who feel that lottery, charity, and special interest stories should not be allowed to compete in Kona or Vegas because they are "championship" events.  I do not share that opinion, and my rationale behind it is becasue Kona and Vegas are not "true" championship events (such as the Olympics where 100% of the athletes earn their spot by qualifying or at least being selected by their countries Olympic committee).  Kona and Vegas are simply "labled" as championship events by the WTC, but does require most of the participants to follow some sort of qualifying standard.

So sort of getting back to the original topic.  My point is that lots of races label themselves as "championship" races...but do not require qualifying times.  If a race does not require qualifying times for registration, then take the word "championship" with a grain of salt and plan to register early.

tamason - 2013-02-12 10:17 AM Breaking news!  Newly proposed rules will require all USMS distance events be completed with.......wait for it............flip turns!!Smile

Well...that should eliminate about 75% of those registered!

Getting ready to sign up for our provincial masters meet and I was reading the entry guide and here is what a meet manager needs to include in their lingo to avoid this kind of a clusterfuck. " The Meet Manager reserves the right to alter, revise, limit enrolment or otherwise modify the program to ensure maximum number of swims in a session of reasonable length, following receipt of entries.". In other words DO NOT announce a hard cap for the distance events and DO NOT restrict entry. Figure out how many heats you can fit in and politely offer those who don't make it in the chance to switch their entries, don't want to switch then too bad sad.

EThe fact the the meet manager for our championship is a distance swimmer (so is her hubby) does not hurt (W50-54 #3 all time in 1500 at 18:38 SCM)
