Subject: Ironman Race Kit

Hi, I'm racing IM Melbourne in six weeks and I'm still tossing up my options.  In my 6 HIM I have always raced in a one piece accept one.  I do prefer the one piece, but still undecided.  I do know the toilet convenience argument with a two piece though, but I hate how a two piece top never stays still and I haven't found a pair of shorts (2xu and Orca where the draw string doesn't cut me like a knife...

So the question is for those that wear the same kit from start to finish, what has been the one piece or two piece short brand and model of choice.  My main concern is the chamois, my ZOOT one piece starts to irritate at the end of HIM on the seem of the chamois, and my Orca two piece, although I like the chamois (very thin and I would wear bike shorts over for the ride) the draw string waist cuts through me like a knife.

Any advice and tips would be great.

I worry less about the toilet convenience and more about the comfort.

Desoto tri-bibs would still be convenient for a pit stop taking a leak anyways. :p

I'd like to try them, but my kits are shop, so I wear them :p

Last year at IM Louisville I raced in my Kiawami 2 piece (Prima XC Top and Bottom). The chamois is a minimalist chamois(almost like a piece of soft fleece) and loved it. This was the most comfortable chamois to swim/bike and run in. I had no irritation/comfort issues. But I always ride/train in a tri short so I am used to a minimal chamois. This year I am using the champion system apex blade tri short (new team changed their racing kit)  and enjoy this one as well. Advice is to train a couple times in what you plan to race in but not too much. Tri chamois can break down alot quicker than a cycling chamois. I also COVER/SOAK my chamois with chamois butter mid day saturday, let it dry and then re apply more sunday morning before putting it on.

Good luck at Melbourne and finding a solution.

I wore pearl izumi pros under my wetsuit through on a bike jersey at t1. I did a full change into running shorts and a running shirt at t2. Probably took an extra 2 min but saved more than that on the run. The bike shorts gave me a lot of comfort over trishorts. 70.3 I would probably opt for tri shorts full im definatly bike shorts.

Hi Mate,

Im in the same boat trying to decide what to wear for IM Melb! No offence to the ladies out there but I feel like a woman trying to decide what to wear out and constantly changing my mind!

I train in my bib shorts which are the most comfortable thing I have, much better then tri shorts.  I think i have decided wear by bib shorts and  do a complete change at the transitions. It might take a min longer but I think its better to be comfortable on the long ride!

Good luck!

I am not comfortable for long rides in my current tri-shorts. I'm going to wear compression shorts for the swim (under my wet suit) and put on my bike shorts at t1, take them off at t2, and run in the compression shorts.

For IMAZ, I anticipate doing two complete wardrobe changes.  I intend to change into dry bike shorts in T1 and compression shorts in T2.  For me, the comfort will more than make up any time lost changing.  For that long of a ride and run, comfort is key for me.  Leadman 125 in Tempe, AZ coming up in a couple of months is my first 1/2ish distance race, and I have no idea what to wear on the bottom half.  My fav is a trisuit, but they are a hassle in the porta-a-potties!Yell

Don't underestimate getting used to tri shorts.

I've got a cycling buddy who only EVER wears tri shorts now since he's so used to them and finds full bibs too bulky and uncomfortable :p

I couldn't go 30k on my old bibs, now I can do 250 km before I start to get sore.

Time in the saddle......

All I can wear is tri-shorts now.  Once I went to the Adamo saddle, the bike shorts were too much.  I am planning on a tri suit for IMLP in July.  We'll see if I still think so after a 112 miles in the tri suit.

Lots of people like Oomph shorts (including me)   Desoto shorts have a nice waist band that should not cut you.  I am anti-bike shorts as well. Train like you race.  I also do not like a one piece but its a personal preference.  As a girl I do NOT want to be half naked in a nasty porta potty in the dark on the run thankyouverymuch.  Although I wear the same thing all day I also put a bike shirt over my tri top but IMFL is usually a cold race.  If you are planning on a full wardrobe change I would advise to try getting you tri clothes on after you shower to practice because its not easy when you are wet.  Then add in the chaos of the transition tent.........just saying.

Thanks for everyone's feed back. A bit of an update though.  I'm more interested in the tri shorts or one piece tri suit brand/model you have tested and like or don't like.

I do train in what I "plan" to race in and because of this the options I've been looking at either have a waist band that cuts me to bits or the seem on the chamios does the same (with my one piece).

So i'm looking for your recommendations.  Those received have been great so far though, keep them coming as I would like to hit the shops in the next week.

Cheers,
