Subject: Best way to "restart" a derailed training plan
I started training with the 20 week beginner half ironman plan in mid-January. I got two weeks into it and then got sick with strep. I was sick for the last two weeks and still not ready to restart this week. I plan to restart next Monday, which at that point, if I were healthy, I would be 5 weeks into the plan. My fitness was good before I started the plan, but not race ready. I have a race on June 2nd that I am aiming for. How should I modify the plan now that I've missed 3 weeks? Should I start back at the begining or where I left off? Or should I jump right in on the day I should be on since it's still early in the 20 week plan and my fitness is pretty good? Not sure how to make up the time. Any advice?

Tough question to answer but I would suggest starting off with the first week to ease back into things, skip the 2nd week and go onto the 3rd week, skip the 4th week and onto the 5th week. Somewhere in there you should have a recovery week where you will want to do and then from there jump up to where you are supposed to be at for your training.

Or you could just start out from week 1 again and towards the end of your training jump up to match closer towards the end of your training. The main thing is to not over do it getting back to training.

Really try to make sure you do the recovery weeks as those are beneficial to give your body a chance to refresh and prepare for the next build phase.

Here's what I would do:  Start where you would be now.  If it's too hard (accepting that getting going again might extra uncomfortable) then reevaluate.     A training schedule off the shelf has a bit of arbitrariness to it anyway.

or you could switch over to the 16 week plan, which for a June 2 tri would make this week 1.

I suggest starting back on week three of the plan and see how you feel.  If you feel good, then jump ahead to where you would have been,  if not then just continue from that point.   You still have a long time to get ready, so I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point; most training plans have some "padding" built into them.  Stuff happens and you'll probably have some other conflicts and setbacks along the way.  Learning how to deal with adversity and interuptions to your training are just part of the deal.

Good luck with your training.

I'd do this too, but perhaps you could cut it down by 25% or so..and ease into it.

You're still at the early stages of the training period so just don't get sick again ! ;-)

I would do the same as this suggestion.  You aren't that far in.  I broke a rib week 1 of my 30 week IM program and lost a month in 2011, started up again at the right spot and was ok.  I'm doing another 30 week IM program now and missed the first 4 weeks again with an AC separation but I'm now back in it.  If it feels like too much just back it down for a couple weeks.

depends on lots of things.  Sometimes there is a base period in plans which is fairly easy.  Sometimes it is fairly intense.  If the plan and your current fitness level indicates there should have been some growth over those 3 weeks then I say start from scratch.  If you have years of training behind you then, well you would know what to do I guess.  So I say start from scratch.  If after 3-4 weeks you find it far too easy then up the intensity slightly.  I think in most plans that first 4-5 weeks should be fairly easy and feel rather tame, preparing you for the difficulties to come.
