Subject: pedal trouble

I tried for over 45 minutes today to get the pedals off my road bike to put them on my new tri bike.  Any suggestions?

Are you using a pedal wrench?    Are you twisting them the correct way (the right hand side is the normal twist left, the left hand side is twist right, remember "back off" because both pedals are removed by pulling the wrench backward over the top of the pedal)

If so, and you can't get them off, you might have a quick trip to the LBS in your future.

Twist towards the rear wheel. Both side. + on the pedal wrench.

Putting them on is so much easier than getting them off. I kind of have to hold my bike over my top tube so the crank doesn't move when I try to turn them backward.

Twist towards the rear wheel. Both side. + on the pedal wrench.

A mechanic told me years ago something I will never forget...EVERYTHING loosens towards the rear of the bike and tightens to the front...pedals and bottom bracket included. Every time I try to logically think which way the threads are directed I come up with the incorrect answer and I just go back to that rule of thumb.

What type of pedals do you have.

Some use a pedal wrench that goes between the pedal and the crank, and some use a hex wrench that comes in from the back side of the crank.

They can be very tight and you might have to use some leverage with preasure on the other pedal/crank arm.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a new pair of pedals

I'd given up trying a couple of times because I felt if I use any more force I'm going to break them.  Finally I just resigned myself to breaking them and they came off fine, they were just really, really tight.  Mine were the hex wrench style.

+1 on the cheater bar. I use a 3-4 foot piece of pipe and as stated above the pedals losen towards the rear opposite of pedal motion.

Assuming you are bracing the crank, using the pedal wrench and turning it the correct way for each pedal. Try PB Blaster penetrating oil to loosen the the bolt. I also recommend greasing the pedals prior to installing. Annually I strip my bikes down to the frame and relube all of the parts it helps prevent things from getting stuck.
