Subject: Help needed: New Cheaper bike or more expensive used bike

Hello all. I would like to get your opinions. I am looking to purchase my first triathlon bike and I have my budget all set out. Right now, I am looking at 2 options.

  1. I found a used 2011 Trek Speed Concept 7.2 running Sram Rival for $1700. I had it looked over by a Trek bike shop, and they said that the chain would need to be replaced due to wear, and the front derailleur cable also needs to be replaced due to being too hard to switch the gear (they said it could be a kink in the cable). Everything else seems to be in working order, and the bike has been kept nice. So, for the bike ($1700) repairs and tune up ($120) and a tri-fit from my LBS ($220) I will be all in on this bike for about $2040.

  2. The second option I am looking at is a 2012 Felt B16 running Ultegra that I could purchase new for about $1750 from my LBS. Obviously, the cost for repair would be nil since it is new, and the fit again would be about $220. This puts the cost all in at about $1970 plus tax, so about the same cost.

Considering both being a good fit for me, which of these do you feel is the best value?

I would go speed concept, that being said I'm not the biggest felt fan.

Can you back into this solution. Get fit on the size cycle, know what your ideal measurements are, then select the bike closest to that? That is what I did and i love my tri bike, a Cyfac.

Best of luck

I have bought both new and used, and both can be good choices.

Benefit of the Felt: you get nicer components, and those components are brand new.

Benefit of the Trek: you get a nicer frame.

My recommendation is try them both out.  Pick the one that feels/rides the best.  Also, your shop should be able to tell you which one fits your measurements best.

Agree both are reasonable and go with the one that fits and feels best.

IMO I like this answer the best so far. Get a good bike fit assessment FIRST then pick out a new bike that fits you best. In that price range and your stated choices, neither bike is going to limit your performance till later in your biking carrier.Hope this helps

Thanks. I'm in Wisconsin, but I found one online for $1600 including shipping. If I decide to go the Felt route the shop may price match.

Definately a tough call, But I think I would opt for New to me going new just make sence if the money is similer and avoids any possible issuse plus you will have full support and warrenty of the LBS plus I have a thing for the ultegra groupset its smooth rugged and reliable as heck when poperly setup.

Fit is most important, but after seeing this comment above and reading through the thread am a little surprised that no one has mentioned the fit cost.  It might be that I'm from a different state, but the LBS usually does the fitting and 6 months worth of tune ups for free as a part of the purchase.  I would discuss a free fitting with them because that would make up the difference of ordering on line and you have to add in shipping cost.  To me if you purchase new it is best to do so from LBS.  Just my .02

Thanks all. I went to my LBS today and actually decided on a new 2012 Cervelo P2 Ultegra. All in it with tax it cost me 2375 so I'm very happy with it. Now I'm ready for the season to begin.

lots of times a LBS will provide free maintenance for a year on a new bike too.  and my LBS will provide a free fit on a new bike purchase.
