Subject: Multisport GPS Training watch Garmin vs. Magellan

Ok, so I have always trained with nothing more than a $10 walmart stop watch for running, and a standard cyclometer for the bike.  I have finally decided that I want to step up to the 21st century and get a GPS watch.  I have been researching for a while now and was pretty much set on the Garmin 310xt...but that may have changed...now there is the Magellan Switch-up...

So my question is this....

Garmin 310xt vs Magellan Switch-up...anyone have any experience with either of them or even both?  I read the DC rainmaker review of the Magellan...the one thing I would like more info on is the battery life of the Magellan and the fact that it might be expandable...

What I am seeing:

Garmin--tried and true

Magellan--able to communicate with any ANT+ device not just brand specific.  Workouts are exported in the same Garmin file type...

I'm not familiar with the Magellan, but have used the Garmin 305 and 910xt, and have coached people who use the 310xt.  Personally, I use the 910xt and love it.

I've had zero issues with the 910, and it's ant+ compatible with other devices, not just Garmin products.  At one time, the 310 was the way to go, but with the introduction of the 910, IMO, the only reason for a triathlete to buy a 310 is if the 910 is out of their budget.

The 910xt is out of my budget.  The 310xt can be had new for $250 but that is without any of the quick release accessories or a HR strap...the Switch-up has some really cool features that have sparked my interest.  The switch up with all mounts and HR strap is $299...

I like the idea of the tried and true aspect of the Garmin...it is a great selling product for a reason but I would like to know if the Switch up is truly giving it a run for the money with all the features it has over the Garmin.  DCrainmaker had a great review of the Switch-up though and seems to be really competativly priced...plus i like the interchangable battery of the switch up...

Just wanting to know if anybody has personally tried the Switch up...

anyone else have any info to add in here???  Been doing research and reading reviews a lot lately and going to finally pull the trigger this week but still debating on which one.  I am leaning towards to 310xt...

can anyone talk me out of the 310?  the 910 is out of my budget...

The primary concern I'd have about the Magellan is upload compatibility with sites like BT, ST, and TrainingPeaks.  I did a quick look here on BT and on TP, and didn't see it listed.  Before you buy, make sure it's compatible.

Honestly, if you can afford the 310, then I think that you should STRONGLY consider holding onto the money and either:

1. continue to save and wait until you can get the 910

2. continue to save while keeping an eye on the Classified here and at slowtwitch for a 910 on discount.  I've seen them sold for as little as $250.

The 910 is really, truly worth it for the triathlete.

This may be a short-sighted opinion, and I have not used the Mag products, but my advice is "When in doubt, Go Garmin".  For many reasons, they are the industry leader.  Customer service, interoperability with other online services, and the simple fact that you'll have the same platform as MOST other folks (peer/friend help figuring stuff out).

Buy Garmin and never look back!

310 with HRM = $189

With that deal, just sealed it...bought it.
