So I am curious, I understand that it depends on how many slots are given, how many athletes are in the age group and who claims them and who does not, but in general what would you say you have to finish in your age group to have a shot at claiming a KQ spot with some roll down luck, Top 10? Also how do you find out who qualified for KQ in an event in 2012?

Are you looking for times or placement?

Regardless checkout the Enhanced Ironman Results over at slowtwitch.

Not everyone has Kona slots but the majority do. Gives you a great breakdown of all the splits and what you will need (on average) to qualify.

I've seen those over there but never really took a look at them.  Awesome information!  Also makes me even more glad I'm taking another year before I step up to a full IM.

Male 40-44 at IMFL rolled to like place 150 once.  My friend came in like 50th and nearly cried when I told him.  You never know

Every race is different and it depends on the time of year and demographics.

IMWI is the first qualifier for Kona and spots usually never roll down and if they do it's 1-2 spots. IMLOU is 2 weeks prior and the last qualifier for Kona, since it is about 6-8 weeks before the race the roll down goes down a bit more.

European/Asia races roll down more the American races (cost of travel), this is really seen for Vegas.

If you don't need somewhere to be Monday morning, you might as well go to the roll down, it will at least motivate you to try again if you miss your spot. It's pretty cool watching people take their slots, after years of handwork for it.

A 50 slot race is generally going to have about 4 or 5 spots for M30-34.

If you're serious about qualifying, don't count on a roll down.  Strive for a little faster than the times that qualified without roll down in your AG in that race in recent years.  If you hit your time, you probably KQ.  Miss it by a little, and you've still got a decent shot at a roll down spot.

I think that is part of his question -- how do you find out what those times are?

There doesn't seem to be a good list. I didn't see a qualified list like they've had before. But anyway, it's basically going to be the top 1-2 spots for most age-groups. The 3 in the M30-44 range could go bigger as they tend to be more populated, maybe out to 3,4,5 depending on total slot allocation for that race and field size. So really, about anyone needs to get one of the top couple spots. At the very least, can you podium your age-group? Look at previous years times, and that's where you'll need to be. Trying to get more resolution is likely an exercise in futility anyway as things move around from year to year due to weather or field variation.

I always just use Google to find it for particular events.  For example, the OP has IMAZ on his race list from 2012.  If he wanted to KQ last year, I would Use this link: http://www.runtri.com/2012/06/ironman-arizona-kona-qualifying-times.html to determine that I'd expect him to need a time of about 9:15  to 9:30 at the slowest to have a good shot at KQing in the M30-34 AG, because the last spots for 2009, 2010, and 2011 were 9:30, 9:35, and 9:16 respectively.

ETA: Other races have different times that make it in, so it's necessary to look it up for your particular event.

Big Picture:
Any IM other than FL or Arizona = 10 hrs or faster
FL & Arizona = 9:35 or faster

These are solid guidelines for KQ for male 30-45

KQ times, to me, are staggeringly fast for amateur athletes.  Hats off to anyone who qualifies for Kona and also has a real job, family obligations, etc.

Unlike BQ times, which I think most people can hit if they train really hard and smart, I believe Kona qualifying requires not only a significant amount of hard work but also some genetic good fortune.
