My son has a show & tell at school tomorrow and wanted to bring something really unusual.  Alas, I don't own anything that is terribly unusual.  Turn of the century brass telescope was the best I could do.  What is the most unusual item that you own?

An Aztec sacrificial knife. Obsidian blade, some sort of dude humping the handle made out of wood with some stone inlay.

Was given to me for being stupid, jumping into a river and pulling someone out. Chief was appreciative.

A collection of fish fossils. I'm a science geek, and my University Geology Department sells them once a year to raise money for scholarships.

I'm sure/hope I have other more unusual stuff, but a favorite is my "velvet Elvis".  More like a smooth fabric, but anyway... I made an art project of it.

Probably not unusual, but my bass guitar is signed by Nich St. Nickolaus of Steppenwolf and Rick Derringer.  One of my bands opened for them many years ago, and they signed my electric bass guitar.

I have a drill press made by my grandfather of scrap. It includes the lower unit from a 1930's outboard motor.  He built it in the early 1940's.  It still runs.  It has a lot of gear reduction using multiple belts and this outboard motor part so he could drill steel at low speed.  During the war, high speed tool steel was not available. He needed to be able to run conventional bits at very low RPM, like 10-20 RPM.  The rest of the thing is just a marvel of re-purposed stuff. He was a machinist. I wish I had known him longer.  I was 3 when he died.

My grandfather was also a machinist back in the day. He made several really cool things, including this press camera. In homage, I bought some sheet film, took some photos, and developed them.

He died when I was 12, and I always wished I could have had an adult conversation with him.

First thing that comes to mind: a chain dog.

Chain Dog

The area I'm from used to be center of a huge cypress lumber industry in the early part of last century. These these were use to connect logs together to float them to the lumber mill. Every once in a while you can still dredge one up. My grandfather on my father's side was a crew boss for lumberjacks.

Second thing I think of, from the same grandfather, is a set of brass knuckles that were issued to him in World War I.

I have recently come into ownership of a family heirloom spittoon. And then there is MR. Booty, although 'ownership' is not exactly the relationship.

In 1981 my father was shot in the lower chest while on duty. He was also a police officer and his vest stopped the bullet and he is still alive today. I have the bullet and vest in my police memorabilia room to remind me every day to wear my vest. I guess that unusual.

Arcade stuff:

DDR/ITG  machine, a Pop'n Music arcade game, and some some art such as pinball posters. The unusual one would be the kick plate decal for a Galaga machine, unused new old stock (framed.)

Well, it would either have to be the balalaika my father picked up in Russia in the 70's or the baseball signed by Willy Mays and a 5 year old version of yours truly, only one of those in the world.

A cut and polished piece of a charred rib moulding from the South Transect of the York Minister, the remains of a major fire in the cathedral in 1984.  My parents live in York, and each time I visit them, I always go to the York Minster.  I'm not a religious person (an atheist in fact), but I do feel spiritual about some places, and York Minister always sends shivers down my spine.  I'm constantly in awe of the designers and workers who built this amazing cathedral from 1220 and 1472 AD, and to the people who now renovate it and other historical buildings.  My parents bought this piece of wood for me about 6 years ago, and I absolutely treasure it.  I have always lived and traveled around the world, but I can now see and touch a piece of my hometown, plus marvel at the history associated with it.

I have a peice of driftwood that looks exactly like an orangutang.  Being from the 60's I even macrameyed a vine looking piece for it to hang from.

I have another piece of driftwood that is a dolphin with eye and tail.

Ok I know what you are all thinking, and it is medicinal.

Wow, that camera shows some incredible wood and metal working craftsmanship.  I checked out your Flickr pictures.  You obviously got the photography gene.  I have my father's cameras.  I should share some pictures of his stuff.  No Leica's but there is an original Brownie (the one with the folding bellows).  He also had a Claris which has a Leica lens.  It is a post war camera made before the German camera body factory was running.

I have some cool stuff. I have a book (written in German) with a chapter about me (under a pseudonym), signed by the author. I have a pitcher made of pewter and a human skull (not my own). I have a map of South America thats around 600 years old (and it doesn't look anything like South America). I have a shirt that Jeremy Guthrie wore under his jersey the day he threw 7 innings of no hit ball against White Sox last summer (subsequently washed of course).
