I haven't been using this tactic in a while, but I used to have one certain song I'd play on a run when I was either drained and needed something to keep going, or when I wanted to finish the last few minutes strong. (And yes, I train with my earphones, but lets not get into that discussion!

My song was always (don't laugh) "Whiskey In The Jar" by Metallica. Obviously the pacing helps a little, and I just always loved it.

I'd be curious to know what songs others go to for their inspiration? Might be nice to put together a whole playlist of these for future motivation!

Yup.  It is a techno song by Italian DJ Mauro Picotto.

Dolphin (Picotto Mix) - DJ Gee (start listening at about 3:30 and give it 2.5 minutes - my version is cropped)

There are a few others on my MP3 player which are also very good:

Magic Flight- Mauro Picotto (it starts hitting it at 1:15, has a slow part and then is awesome from 3:30)

Believe - Franka Potente (from the "Run Lola Run" soundtrack)

I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas

P.S. There is a similar thread floating around on Cup 'O Joe

The Ramones cover of Tom Waits' "I don't want to grow up."

Kanye & JZ's "N****s in Paris." (Yes, I know Kanye's a jerk).

"The House that Heaven Built" by the Japandroids.

Late last summer it was Maroon 5's One More Night. Here lately it has been Kanye West's Power.

Although I just heard the new Fall Out Boy song and it's got a great fast beat to it. I still love some Mettalica thrown in there every now and then.

Pretty much anything zac brown band. And I know it sounds crazy, but Willie nelsons city of new Orleans gets my feet moving to about a 4:55 mile pace on the run.
Aside from that, any hard hitting upbeat music from the 80s and 90s works well for me.

Eminem: Unitl I collapse

For some reason this song gets me going.  I have this set as my alarm for early morning swims or runs.

Even better is the  Ironman motivational video that accompanies the song.

The theme song from Chariots of Fire. I have it on my MP3 but rarely run with it; use it only when I have to run on a treadmill and sometimes listen to it before the start of a race.  There actually was a band playing it when I finished my first marathon--without that music I probably would have just curled up at the side of the road and gone to sleep. (Yes, it was a pretty serious case of undertraining/ bonking/hitting the wall. Chalk it up to being fourteen and clueless.) Even now it brings back memories of that "sprint" to the finish of what I still consider my hardest race!

There are also two songs by one of my favorite Hawaiian groups (Hapa) that I listen to really loud when I'm tired on brick runs or trainer rides. Very upbeat and always makes me think of my favorite runs in Honolulu, not whatever boring place I happen to be in reality.

Polar opposites as far as music style, but it is really all about the beat.
