Subject: Recommendations for an Olympic Race?
After completing 4 sprints last season in my first triathlon season, I want to find an Olympic Race in June, July or August for this year to be my A race.  What are your recommendations for the better ones in Georgia or within relatively close distance?  I appreciate any help I can get.

Tri The Parks series this year is having an Oly at Blalock Lakes.  Blalock Lakes is my favorite venue after doing the sprint there last year.  This year they'll have a sprint on June 1 and the Oly on June 22.

http://www.tribluesky.com/Tri_the_Parks/Events.html

The venue is a small lake in a large subdivision out in the country.  The bike course is scenic, rolling, quiet country roads.  This is near "silk sheets".  The run course for the sprint was an out and back, rolling, within the subdivision - basically zero traffic.  The transition area is a grass lawn 20 feet from the lake.  And free parking!

I don't know how they will do the Oly.  The sprint swim was almost the length of the small lake, and back.  There's plenty of quiet country roads for a longer bike course.  They *might* be able to fit a whole 10k run within the sub-division.  Or they may just have us run 2 laps.

I highly recommend it.  It's just beyond Newnan, Ga, so it's one of the closest venues to Atlanta.

Don't know what part of Ga you're in but in Fernandina Beach,Fla there is the Jacksonville tri series. This is a three race event in June,July,August with both sprint and Oly distance.Basically Fernandina is on the Ga/Fla state line just below Brunswick.DRC sports puts it on and does a good job plus the area is very family friendly,if you have one.

What part of the state are you in, are you ok with spending the night, and do you like BIG events or smaller ones?

My favorite, which is only a few hours from Atlanta is the Chattanooga Waterfront Olympic held in mid July

http://www.team-magic.com/events/waterfront/index.html

Fast downstream swim
Rolling bike course mostly on a highway
Out and back run mostly on a greenway, great if you have friends running the race as well

Biggest downside is it can be fairly hot in mid July

I am on the south side of Atlanta and don't mind traveling a couple of hours or spending the night before if needed. I would bring the family if that was necessary. I have done small events (just over 100 participants) and bigger ones (over 1000, PTC sprint) and like both, as long the race is well organized and supported. I was looking at the Blalock lake, the Columbus, and am open to other suggestions. I'd like to stay away from too much climbing as I just don't have the opportunity to train on too many hills where I normally ride. I don't mind rolling stuff, just when the climbs start getting real ratings I get out of my element. Thanks for all of the help so far. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Ok, here are my recommendations:

Chattanooga - Great big time race.  It is well organized.  The course can be hot, but it's not awful. Chattanooga is an OK place to hang out.  Not great, just OK.

Any race at the beach - There are a couple at Fernandina Beach and a couple along the panhandle.  The advantages are you and the family can make a three day weekend at the beach out of your race.

Peachtree City Olympic-  The best run local Olympic.

Doug, when is the PTC Olympic? The Tri-PTC club doesn't put it on, I checked their website for it. Can you post a link for registration? I'm in Fayetteville so that would be ideal.

There is always West Point down in LaGrange as well.

Jim and his team do a great job putting this one on and since it moved to late April it is a can't miss.

There is also a small local Olympic-ish race in Rome the first week of May. Downstream swim that makes Augusta look like standing water, hilly bike, not too bad of a run.

I wanted to chime in that the PTC International that is referenced is a great race. I've done it the past two years. I've done the Chattanooga and I like the PTC better. Mostly, I will admit, is because the weather for PTC has been prefect compared to Chattnoogas hotter than hades. The only think I don't like about PTC is the swim kind of sucks. That lake is so muddy my outfit gets stained. But the bike course is very nice and the run is flat and shady. I love the run. Had the best runs there out of any tri I have ever done. They also have great pizza after the race. I didn't eat any because my kids at several pieces but they declared it was the best they had ever had.

I also think there is an Olympic in Callaway Gardens though I am not sure when it is. I did the marathon there recently and it is a great place to take the family and a beautiful park.

I concur with the reviews of the PTC Olympic - it was my first Oly race last year and as a newbie I found it very doable. If you want something later in the season, I also enjoyed the Hot Dam Olympic last September outside Augusta. It was a very small race but Setup has included it as part of their Setup Cup so I presume it'll grow this year. I didn't love the run course (double out-and-back, maybe they'll change it if they have larger numbers) but the swim, bike, and overall venue were quite nice. And the awards were wine!

Check out Set Up Events site.South Carolina has some nice olys that are not a far drive from the Atl area. For instance Langley pond in Aiken,SC is a nice race. They moved the date back to august this year for some reason. It used to be my kick off race.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'm going to sit down with my calendar and figure out which one to do.
