I've just completed my first... and I constantly said.. my only.. Ironman.  It was a two year journing in the making with a small hiccup 14 months ago with a breast cancer diagnosis.  Ironman was my keep looking forward focus point (but thankfully my diagnosis was very early and only required a partial mastectomy (via two surgeries) and radiotherapy).   I always said this was a one time only thing.  But.. and here is the suprising bit... I am so totally surprised to feel that I actually think I want to do it again.

I'm not a super athlete .. but one of the 16hour plus finishers (but I finished which is what it was all about).   Am I crazy??

I think it is fairly normal.  I never said it was my only, but I certainly wasn't dying to do a second until I finished.

Congratulations on your recovery and your ironman.  completing an ironman 14 months after a cancer diagnosis is an amazing accomplishment.  So many people would give up on the goal, but it sounds like you used the goal to get through something that must have been much harder than training for and completing an ironman.

Congratulations!  It's quite normal.  I was planning to be a "one and done" triathlete going into my IM last year, and I'm in the same boat you are.  Planning on 2014 for my next one.  We're hooked.

Congratulations on beating breast cancer!

After IMKY in 2008, I said NEVER AGAIN! Then I got crazed and did IMTX in 2012. I honestly wanted a better time. Didn't get it. In fact, I went SLOWER. Ugh. So I'm thinking about revenge on IMTX in 2014. We will see what happens.

Never say never....

Congratulations. you sure deserve that medal.

Give it a month or two or even three and see if you still feel the same way. training for your second may not have the same buzzz as the first.

good luck with your desision.

I said I'd probably only do one, too, and also came in over 16 hours.
Then I wanted a better time so did one the next year and shaved an hour off.

I started training yesterday for my 3rd

I'm looking forward to doing my first IM, and sometimes as I am training, the time and the distances seem so daunting I wonder if there will be a first, much less a second. Congrats all the way around!

Normal. Yep. I've been quitting IMs for the last few years. Hasn't worked out. Two more coming up this year. The thought of stopping has helped me with not upgrading my bike though.....so I'm saving money. Yea, that's it.

I think it boils down to if you really enjoy the training and resulting lifestyle that is required to do this.  It's a journey and adventure each time around.  For some, that journey is worth doing again and again.  Sounds like you may be one of those types.

Congratulations on your recovery and your completion of the IM. I don't think you are crazy at all and of all people you deserve to do whatever makes you happy. Personally I always thought I would ultimately complete an IM, but after my first HIM in January, I can't envision getting through an IM, so I am in the opposite camp I guess. Talked myself out of it based on HIM experience. So, hats off to you if you want to do it again.

I think we were crazy when we signed up for our first!  Once that line is crossed, everything else just follows naturally!  Congrats on all you have accomplished to date and will in the future!

I don't ever plan on completing an IM.

But you my friend obviously have a bigger task list placed on you soul.

I wish you much success and fully implore that you listen to those inner vibes and give it another go.  You're on the precipice to see how much better you can approve upon your last experience.  We all our, but please keep going!!.

GO! ChrisHaru! GO!

Awesome completion and congrats on your fight with cancer.

For me, I really love that stretching and focus that is required during IM training and race. It takes a lot of work and sacrifice but to hit the wall and find strength and perseverance on the other side is amazing.

Enjoy your success and where your dreams take you.

Thanks for all your postive reinforcements that I'm not crazy (well not totally anyway - LOL).  Well decision made and have registered already.  Figured no point procrastinating and prolonging the will I or wont I discussion in my head any longer.   Locked and loaded for 2014.

Congrats on beating breast cancer, even if it was an early diagnosis that's still a great thing no matter what

And to be honest, I don't think you're normal. I don't think anyone that's willing to subject themselves to an ironman is normal, for that matter, so if you want to do it once it'll probably happen again x)

I started laughing after I read your first sentence because I KNEW where it was headed!  Going long is addictive and you are normal.  I said the same thing when I did my first, but promptly did a second.  I SWORE the second was my last and am now registered for my third.

Be thankful that you are healthy enough to do it again if you want.  You will have more regrets if you do not follow your heart than if you do...

Congrats on beating cancer and your IM finish.

What is normal anyway?  Pretty much my entire social circle has done one or more ironmans so I think tis pretty normal.  If you enjoy it ROCK ON!!

Thanks for that BondGirl - yes that was me.  Felt kind of strange filming it but if helps save one life, or inspire one person, it is worth it.  Your post makes you realise how small the world is at times.
