The largest vials are 10mL, so at most they took is 120mL. The average blood donation is 450-500mL and is about 10% of your blood volume, which as mentioned takes up to 8 weeks to recover.

So you are looking at a maximum of 2.5% of blood volume and 2 week recovery. Maximum.

I had recently donated blood for the first time in a long time.  Apparently, there is a new process similar to platelet donation in process.  They took some blood, spun it to remove the red cells then put the remaining fluid back in with a little extra Saline fluid.  It was an option they offered, but you could also donate the more common way.  The tech explained that it takes a little longer but you end up walking out pretty much volume neutral.  Their sell on it was also that the blood would make it to the hospital 24hrs faster.  You are still down the red blood cells, but I felt fine afterwards that day, in the past I could feel it a little.  I ran the next day and felt totally normal.  I'm sure there's a difference, but it wasn't noticeable to me.

It's not about how much blood you take out, it's when you put it back in - that's when performance really peaks. Just ask Lance (and Floyd, and Tyler, and Jan, etc...) P.S. That was a (bad) joke, in case anyone was wondering. ;-)

You don't have to dope to get gains back in your red blood cell count.

My N=1 looks like this: I donate double red cells regularly. This would be the opposite of blood doping. I'm really asking for performance drops like hat, but considering my current "performance" I'm not that concerned. Anyway, you can only give double red every 16 weeks, as opposed to every 8 weeks with a regular whole blood donation. It is the longest recovery in any kind of blood donation. Plasma and platelets are short term. That red blood cell count is key.

So anyway, I last gave double red cells on November 21. I won't be able to give again until this Tuesday, March 13. I had bloodwork done on February 20, three weeks before I should expect to be back to normal. My red blood cell count was high. I attribute it to eating high amounts of red meat and green leafy vegetables with my switch over to paleo and low carb. At the same time i've been dropping weight and reversed diabetes, in case anyone is worried about the fat guy eating bacon.

So, cliffs notes..... Red blood cell count is not static or only influenced by blood doping. Eat a steak and spinach.

I was recently diagnosed with High Hematocrit and high Red blood cell count, so I have had to give 400 ml of blood every week for the past 6 weeks to get my levels back to normal.

Let me tell you, I am really feeling it!  WEakness, and barely able to complete rides that I had been crushing! ( my guess is that the extra red blood cells were helping O2 delivery to the muscles)
