I assume that you are referring to the crossed-out Google statement, and not the issue of veracity on the 'Net. Some people DO believe everything they read, you know.

I'm always good for alibis.

Google, despite the seemingly harmless nature of their little search tool bar, is one of the(if not the most) internet's most influential players, worth billions and growing exponentially - my company alone pays millions for advertising (you didn't think your search results were determined purely by "most visited/searched sites" did you? Google is more powerful than Microsoft when speaking about the internet and further, they are invading your privacy in an insidiously legal way. I don't fault them for being very good, but there has to come a point where we say well, it may be legal, but it's not right and we need to stop it.

Google has bought a significant chunk (and I mean in the neighborhood of half) of all the internet's next generation IP's (IPV6 - Domain/web site addresses). There's a likelihood that in 10 years, you will have to purchase internet space from Google or one of it's resellers. Where is the regulation?

You really have no idea what you are talking about. IPv6 can handle 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 unique addresses. Yes, that is approx 340 trillion, trillion, trillion addresses.

To put that into some perspective, if your were to use up 1 BILLION addresses per second, it would take over 4 billion YEARS to use up just one trillionth of the available addresses.

Some people estimate that the total number of particles in the entire universe is smaller than the number of IPv6 addresses.

Please check the fit of your tin foil hat, it appears to be coming loose.

You may be right, my belligerent friend, and I may not understand at all, but I have a couple of questions.

1. why do you find it necessary to insult someone whom you have never spoken to simply because their understanding of something is not as great as yours? I imagine that you feel like, lacking most social graces you mistakenly feel that thumping your chest and belittling those less knowledgeable in a certain area than yourself make people respect you, but all it really does is expose that you'repetty jerk. Ignorance sucks, belligerence for the sake of being belligerence is gross.

2. If that's the case, and what I'm told is correct, why in the world would Google need to purchase half of that enormous number?

i see no problem with google, especially in comparison to other internet corperations and legeslation.  I do remember reading something about them changing the DNS regestration process, so that only one corperation or very few of them have control, making registration of your own domain very difficult and expensive.  Don't remember the details though.

I also remember something about Google refusing to allow the feds to trace searches to IP's.  Aka if you serached for "bomb plans" on google, google could log your IP and report it to the feds.  The Feds were pressuring them to allow this and google gave them the FU.  This might have been over turned though.

I personally like how google is run as a company.  If I were in software engineering, I'd want to work for them.  Such innovations as google earth, google maps, froogal, google scholar, ect were personal projects by employees.  They had an idea, google let them run with it and helped them realize it.  To date, I have yet to find a more versatile and usefull utility then google maps, and google scholar has helped me quite a bit with research.

This is not new anymore. I received this information about 3 years ago. Email copied below:

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house.
Try It you will be shocked.

Think about it-if a child, single person, ANYONE
gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to
find out where he/she lives.

The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. This is not a hoax;
Mapquest will actually put a star on your house on your street. In order
to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to:

http://www.google.com

and type your phone number in the search bar with dashes (i.e.

555-555-1212)and hit enter. NOTE: If your phone number is not publicly
listed, you should be fine.

If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your
private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone
number. You will see a link where you are allowed to REMOVE yourself.
Feel free to forward on to friends and family.

Welcome to my world.  I own an IT company, and I believe it's a pre-requisite to react this way to anyone who knows less about technology than you do.  :-)  What really sucks when my employees are the ones doing it to our customers.  /facepalm
