Hi Everyone! I have been doing tri's for about 1 1/2 years now. I just finished my first olympic distance race on Sunday. Although I finished within my goal time, I was very dissapointed to see how poorly I compared to the others in my age group. I know that if I took off about 15 lbs that I would be faster. But I am having trouble loosing weight and maintaining my energy for training at the same time. Does anyone have any advice?

Steph,

That's a tough balance of intake versus output. I was in the same boat and used the southbeach diet. However, what I've read is that for folks in training, its not the best approach. It made my workouts very, very hard and painful since I lacked the carbs to fuel my exertion. I did lose weight quickly, but it was painful. I would recommend a nutritionist, one who can help you calculate your total caloric needs and design an eating plan that allows you to train and lose weight.

Also, there's a good article called "The Beginner's Guide to Triathlon Nurtition" on page 77 of the current issue of Triathlete Magazine. It may be of some value to your quest.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to the site Steph. I have the very same issue and am still struggling with it, so you are not alone. I wish I had great words of wisdom for us both! I'll have to check out that Triathlete article.

welcome steph...and perhaps since u just moved into the oly training length bracket, over time, that will also offer more caloric expenditure.  one simple thing to do is to make sure u eat many small meals a day inteasd of 2-3 big one.  although sounding simple,  it does wonders for workout inergy level plus it will help in weightloss endeavors.  although not having personal experience, u may be starving yourself  TOO much (u mentioned low energy levels) - if u starve any animal, the first initial response is to 'keep the weiht' and plummet the energy levels to conserve calories - crudely speaking.

a nutritionist is a great place to start.  its such an individualistic thing for people.

good luck and welcome!

Welcome!!

I have the issue that you described.  I find that running seems to have the biggest impact on my weight and overall conditioning.  I love to swim and bike, but the way for me to get smaller is by running a lot.  Your mileage may vary...
