Subject: 2007 IM Lake Placid as my first IM?
well, July 24 is almost here - when I'd have to sign up for the '07 IM Lake Placid. It would be my first iron race. I have done about 8-10 sprint/oly's, and 1 half IM (sub 6:00), and if I get in, I would do another half this fall, and my third one in the spring. But I don't know...Is it a mistake to do LP as my first iron distance race? I know it's a tough course and it's such a commitment to sign up a whole year in advance. Realistically, I don't know if I'd be able to handle 20 hr training weeks. And I've been fighting some foot problems which may be the beginnings of Plantar Fasciitis.

I'd rather not travel so I've also looked into other nearby Iron races (I'm in NJ), like ChesapeakeMan, Esprit, Ottawa, although they're all in the fall, and next year I'll be in the NYC marathon.

So, what do you think? Sign up for Lake Placid? Postpone decision until 08? Do I suck it up and travel elsewhere? But where?

Thanks for any advice.

Gotta start somewhere. It was my first(2002), second(2003), and will be my fourth(2007). But I'm from upstate NY so it's my 'local' IM and I could and did train on the course w/ day trips. Seriously, it's a great race w/ a beautiful course. Drove much of it last weekend on our way to VT and was reminded yet again how nice it is.

I hope it's not a mistake to do LP as the first, since it will be my first in 17 days. Sounds to me like you're ready to make the jump. You live in the northeast, you know how to ride hills, it's just a fact of life. It is tough to sign up a year in advance - who know's what the year will bring - but you just have to go for it. Like it says in "Going Long" - nobody knows if they're ready to do an IM, you just commit, train, and pray.  Good luck!

You will be fine.   Have a whole year to get in shape for IMLP 07.

It sounds like you are ready as far as race experience goes.  You only have to decide if you are ready to make the commitment to make your training a priority.  You don't have to train 20 hours/week, but you certainly have to make your training a priority.  As far as the plantar fascitis, you should address that asap so you are not dealing with it the whole year.

Basically, if you feel you are going to have more time to train next year or in a couple of years, then put it off.  If you don't see yourself becoming any less busy in the coming years, then I say go for it.  Don't worry too much about the hills, just make sure you do some of your training on major hills and it won't affect you too much!  Good luck
