I know what you mean about starting last. I just did an olympic distance on Sunday and was in the 2nd to last wave start. Its really discouraging when there are hardly any bikes in the racks when you hit T1.

My advice would be to periodically train during the heat. If you normally start a long Saturday bike ride at 7 AM, try moving it to 9 AM. That will help you learn how much fluid you will need to consume and how your body will react to different forms of nutrition during the heat. You can do the same with your runs. I notice a huge difference between running when I first get home from work (5pm) or waiting till evening.

Lara,
I don't mean to validate your -- feeling about starting last but, my wife got some great pics (sorry, not digital so can't upload anytime soon) and she took a pic of the last woman in the transition area peeling off her wetsuit and I gotta' say, it looked awful lonely.
That said, after giving it some thought, since a tri. is a glorified time trial, she probably beat my time, most others did! :-)

Lara,
My only suggestion is I guess you'll have to come out to AZ and do the Lake Pleasant OLY TRI in Sept. to start getting used to the heat.

By the way, my brother Dan and I have committed to doing the 1/2 vineman next August as well. In fact, we will be signing up right after the Solana Beach TRI this August (we heard it sells out quick).

I know what you mean about checking out the vineman website every so often. For me I get more freaked out about the run since I can’t do that distance now but I’ll be ready by next year.

Lara, I like option 1 too.

Otherwise, think about how much fun you'll have passing all those people! Even if the swim is too crowded for a lot of passing, you're going to blow past a lot of them on the bike and the run -- that'll feel good. And you'll make the cutoffs, don't worry! You're going to go in with a TON of experience -- you'll be fine.

For me, I'd consider option #2.  I think I might look pretty fetching in a 2-piece.  Wait, on 2nd thought I'd have to take a pay cut.  And you are NOT getting me anywhere near that delivery room!

This may be extreme but in terms of getting use to the heat you should check out the Badwater website.
http://www.badwaterultra.com/training/index.html the second section in on Heat Training. Granted Death Valley is probably hotter, but there are some good tips on the website.

I find comfort in being in the last wave. This past weekend I was in the second wave and the men were in the 3rd wave - it really is not fun getting swimmed over by a bunch of guys. I got kicked, hit in the face and pulled under the water - Give me the last wave any day.

You should look at it as an advantage. I just did a tri last Sunday and took off with the last wave, 50 and above. I was the last person out of the water so I figured that being dead last (#315), I had a lot of room for improvement during the course of the race. Everyone I passed on the bike and run leg was one up on the overall standings. I did pass a few on the bike leg and one or two on the run leg to finish #284. No, I did not set the world on fire, but I finished. Actually the woman who came in last was greated by her two small children and she crossed the finish line with the two little tykes in hand with the biggest proudest smile on her face...and theirs also.

A couple of things:

- if I finish last, I know that there will be people pulling for me as I come down the stretch (mor so than when you mix in the middle of the pack).  I know my family and friends will be there at the finish line (including the BT gang!)

- If I miss the cutoff, who cares.  I'm sure not going to stop - they would need a whole gang of people to keep me of the course.  I'm finishing. PERIOD.

- I plan to do as much training in the heat (east county biking/running) as posssible.  No need to move to AZ to find some heat.

Plenty of time to train, get ready, freak out, and then get ready angain......

Dan
