Subject: Run ins with cars while cycling

Last weekend, I was nearing the bottom of a hill I was going to turn around and ride back up.  There was a car behind me coming toward the intersection, I looked back to wait, the driver apparently knew my intentions and stopped and waved me across with a smile.   Gave a nice wave as I went back uphill

Then later near the end of the ride I was going downhill to an intersection where I turn right to go home.  A few cars came by me and got in the right lane to turn in front of me.  As I got closer, before I signaled the next car behind me slowed down, allowing me to go straight rather than hurrying to get in front of me and turn.  I turned right and waved a thanks as he came by (in a 'vette, no less)

We always hear about jerk drivers.  Very rarely do we hear about courteous drivers.

new favorite thread.  I've gotten in the habit of waving at and smiling at every driver at an intersection, or that I am passing.  I have had more people let me in or wave me across in the last few months than I did in the last few years.

yes it's nice to have courteous drivers. I suspect they are mostly cyclists, triathletes or sympathetic runners.

but there are those that are TOO courteous or afraid, and ghost you for a long time, even though there's plenty room to go by. sometimes I just pull over and let them go.

usually its the few bad apples that get me unnerved, and I don't notice the courteous ones as much.

Excellent post.

People tend to be polite in my area as well. I make sure to always give them a 'thank you for not hitting me with your car' wave.

I would say FAR more people give me the right of way even if they could clearly make the turn with plenty of time.

Motorists are so nice to cyclists in Denver, it's almost unnerving...  As in wait what seems like minutes at a stop sign or turns so you can go through

What, niceness? I open this thread for a sappy old story about nice cars? Where is the police investigation? The scars, the DRAMA?!!!!!

I feel cheated.....

Like David, I smile and wave at everyone. Most drivers here are very courteous OR they probably know me, OR they are driving a large piece of farm equipment so I just stop and get out of the way!

I too always make it a point to wave to drivers.  On the bike is assures me that they see me.  When i am running on roads with no sidewalks, I always wave to drivers who give me a wide lane.  Almost all of them wave back!

Yesterday I had a BUS driver stay behind me and even gave me plenty of room. This was by South Coast Plaza 4:30 Rush hour traffic. Southern California drivers can be nice most of the time. I always wave a thank you and not the middle finger.

Or when they do decide to pass they honk the horn to let you know they are passing. Scares the crap out of me.

yes, love that one too.  and they floor it like it's critical to unleash the nitrous to pass a little ol' cyclist.

So far, when I've ridden alone I haven't had problems at all with cars. When they stop to let me do my business I give them two fingers up and they wave back. Races have been kinda tough though.

Same here -- 99.9% of the drivers are good, and I've only ever had 1 car give me a hard time, and that was just some faux-hawk'ed troglodite yelling something out a pickup window as he & his buddy drove by. Had no idea what he said, but they went on their way and I never saw them again.

This is a new one! Was riding down a moderately busy stretch of road. 6 motorcyclists, in a line pass me, and each gives me a peace sign as they go by. They also gave me the appropriate amount of space, it was great!

I live in redneck country central VA.  I have had the mixed bag of idiots as well as courteous drivers.  I try to always give a polite wave or nod, shout of thanks to the courteous guys.  I think the polite wave/ nod back as well as our obeying the same stop signs and such that they do goes a LONG way in the drivers willingness to share the road.

Urban Arizona is not always the friendliest place for cycling, and I have a LOT of encounters (averaging 1-3/week).  These involve cars (usually SUVs and trucks) turning in front of me, drivers swerving into the cycling lane (on purpose or by accident), people driving on the wrong side of the road (I always think they're just trying to drive like the Brits and make me feel more at home!!), getting way too close (occasionally clipping my handlebars/shoulder/helmet), spitting and throwing things at me, and telling me that "I shouldn't be on the f***ing road".  Because the majority of cars have tinted/coloured car windows here, it's really really hard to see through the windows if someone is waving you on, or shouting into their cell-phone, so I tend to ignore people who stop and I wave them on with a smile.  They might be trying to be kind, but as I've sadly discovered in AZ it's better to be safe than sorry!

However, when I driver patiently waits behind me to turn, or doesn't pull out in front of me at an intersection, I ALWAYS smile and wave.  Despite the nasty encounters, I still cycle around with a monster grin on my face as I do love cycling, and I'm not going to let any idiot drivers take that away from me. Laughing

Feel the love and share the road.

Other than the occasional moron, I find most drivers fairly courteous.

I've found as long as I'm paying attention and doing what I can to be safe and make everyone's life easier, they appreciate it.

Most of the comments I get are positive from comments on my nice bike, outfit, thanks for the spot i chose to stop at an intersection etc.

To me it doesn't matter if they showed courtesy, almost hit me or were a jerk to me. I just give a friendly wave and keep my happy mood going.

Their attitude will not determine mine for that day.

Most of the drivers I encounter are nice.  There are those few who are just jerks.  The ones that scare me are the totally oblivious ones.  They are so distracted or texting or who knows what that they don't even know a cyclist is there.

Case in point: I am typing this one handed because of the broken arme that is in a cast right now.  I was in a bike lane approaching a light.  A jeep in the right lane decided he wanted to turn...no signal.  So he did, right into my path.  My choices were to get hit or lay the bike down.  I chose the latter and putting my hand down to break the fall I suffered a small fracture in the bone near my wrist.  The guy had no idea what he did and did not stop.

I try real hard to be courteous to drivers and on whole I think they recognize that and appreciate it.  Hard to do though when the driver has no idea there is anything else in the world but them in thier 5000 pound battering ram.

A couple of days ago, someone yelled at me from a passing car. I started to yell back until I realized that they had yelled "Nice bike"
