Subject: 70.3 Training question

Hi, everyone.

Well I'm just finishing my first week of my 70.3 training.  Wow, although I'm having a lot of fun, it is busy!  Question for you all.  I'm doing my long bike (and my plan calls for a short run also) on Saturdays and my long run and a long swim in Sundays.  To keep harmony at home would it be okay to take Sunday as a rest day (as opposed to Monday) and do my long run and long swim on Monday?  Or would that take away from the back-to-back long bike/run to simulate race day?

Thoughts?

The back to back Saturday - Sunday thing is a function of time, as most people have those days to go long and recover.  While some think the long Sunday run is good to "simulate" running on tired legs, myself (and many others) call BS.

Monday would actually be a better day to do your long run, and will give you a higher quality run workout.

ETA - That said, I do the typical long ride Sat -long run Sun simply because that fits my schedule

x2 more time between hard (or long) workouts is much better if you can swing it, reduces chance for injury as well.

For most average athletes, the best plan is going to be one that works best with your schedule.  If doing your long run and swim on Monday keeps your life in order best, then that's what's going to work best for you.

Chris brings up a very good point that if you do your LR on Monday, you will be a little fresher and could lead you to have a better quality run.

However, if it takes you another day to recover from that run, then that's one more easy or recovery day you need to take in addition to your Sunday rest day.  So maybe instead of a full rest day on Sunday...possibly squeeze in a short workout like a 1 hour ride?

Just know that there really is no right or wrong answer.  Just train as much as you can and have fun.

I would actually prefer it that way. Sometimes I do my long run on Saturday morning, and then a long bike on Sunday. I try to get my long run in mid-week to avoid having the long run and ride on consecutive days. My long run is not quality the day after a long ride. Some swear by the long run the day after, others think it is the worst choice... Will you harm your plan? I think not. I think that is better actually...

I take Sunday off.  I fit a long run in during the week.  I would prefer to use Sunday for training but I'd lose another 4 hrs with the family.

Thanks, everyone!  This is great advice and I really appreciate it.   I'm enjoying this training, I know it is early, but I'm sad that I have to take a day off.  Harmony at home, makes harmony in training. I need to keep telling myself this....

For me, family balance is more important than any amount of 'extra training' I could squeeze in.  Without my wife being supportive, there's no way I could train for IM.

I try to look for compromises and she does the same for me.  For example, if we have an event on either Friday / Saturday night I'll always go along and then either make Saturday / Sunday a shorter day or start later.  I also try to get up and start my workouts very early (5:00 - 5:30am) so I don't spend the entire day on Saturday / Sunday's away from home training.

That said, I do my long bikes on Saturday (4-6 hours) and my long run on Sundays (1-3 hours).

I rarely took a day off. It was so hard to fit everything in if I did. I did do a lot of 4:30 a.m. workouts though. That helped with the harmony too. I also do training when my son is at his activities, karate/drum lessons, instead of just sitting there.

Its mostly a function of time. i personally like to put my long workouts on the opposite sides of the week as not to burn my legs out. if you want to simulate race day do a long brick workout such as a 40 mile ride into an 8 mile run about 6-8 weeks out.
