HA!  Thanks everybody!  I have some good tips to try!

I swim at a university pool and no chance they're switching systems anytime soon.  I will continue to wear the chlorine with pride!

Really the bigger problem is that it's kind of irritating my face a little bit, so I at least want to do a good job of washing that.  It is fun when people ask me how far I swam.

I appreciate the good advice!  I especially like the sauna idea.  There's one in the locker room I've been wanting to try.  Now I have a reason!

As a guy you might have to be more selective about your scents but I find that most botanical type body washes work pretty well. My favorite has a lemongrass scent. I don't know if you could find this in your neck of the woods--a natural foods store with body-care products might carry something similar- but it's not particularly girly-smelling.  I also have some kind of "tri-body wash" from a race expo in Singapore that works well and smells mostly like ginger--definitely better than chlorine. Basically you need something with a strong, fresh scent that is stronger than the chlorine.

I use the TriSwim products with a shower scrubbie. The scrubbie helps get the smell away. I like to get the chlorine off because it dries the skin out.

Why get rid of that smell. It's awesome and chicks dig it.

One of the swim class instructors suggested this to our class one winter a few years ago:

http://www.dermaswimpro.com/

It's a lotion called dermaswim that I apply before I swim because the swimming used to dry out my skin pretty badly.  I also use the utraswim shampoo because I really disliked having my skin and hair get dried out.  They work like a dream and actually I've had friends ask me if I had really been swimming that day because I DID NOT smell like chlorine

I don't have a sauna available, but what I have found works great and I guess is the same idea.

Take as HOT a shower as you can stand.  This really opens up the pores and use a wash cloth to really scrub your skin down with whatever soap you use (I use Tom's of Maine).  At the end of the shower, I then switch the water to ice cold to get the pores to close back up again (and it just feels good after the hot water).

Use a good lotion after you dry off.  This helps to keep your skin from drying out and as others have said will mask any last bit of pool smell.

Learned this trick from a lifelong swimmer last year and is the only process that works for me.

Hi Folks,

I have done a lot of research in this area.  In short, chlorine is very hard to wash off.  But, using a concentrated solution of vitamin C will wash the chlorine away, making your skin and hair healthier.  We have a product called SwimSpray which is exceptionally effective at getting the chlorine off.  I invented it while I was swimming before work and struggling with getting the chlorine off.

Beginner Triathlete has reviewed the product.  You can also find lots of information about removing chlorine from hair and skin on the SwimSpray website.  Or you can Google SwimSpray and find reviews and articles.

If you have any questions on this topic, please feel free to contact me.  I am very excited about how well SwimSpray works.

Sincerely,
Andrew Chadeayne, PhD, JD

I tried the Sauna method after a swim on Friday.  It was great!!!  Unfortunately, I don't have time if I sneak in a swim during lunch or cut it close before work...

I went the cheap method first....using "real soap."  It's not really the smell I mind as much as it really does irritate my face.  Limiting the smell would be a bonus, I guess now that I've thought about it more...  The "real soap" helped some, but still there for sure..  Going to keep trying a few more things and see if something can get it clear.  I need to try moisturizer too on my face..  Feels so dry right now!!!

Edit:  Accidentally a word...

I use the Swimspray stuff that is mentioned above. It's the only thing that works for me and it does a very good job of minimizing the chlorine smell. My wife will even hug me now without telling me I stink like the pool.

Definitely try that stuff. Plus they stand by their product.

When I was swimming in chlorine 7 days a week in high school I always had that pool smell. I found it would come out whenever I would get near water. So even if I hadn't swam before I took a shower as soon as I got in the shower I would smell it. Sometimes washing my hands.

Now I swim in a saline pool at the gym or in a lake and the smell doesn't stick around.

Hah! I get this too.  Like the stereotypical guy having an affair and getting caught because he's smells like perfume, I get "you've been swimming again, haven't you?"
