Hines Ward completed his first tri yesterday. The sprint distance Superseal Triathlon in California. I heard his times were as follows:

500 meter swim in 13 minutes

avergaed under 20 MPH for a 20k ride

ran and 8:30 pace for a 6k

finish time was right at 1:27:40

I wonder what the goal is for Kona? Is it just to finish? Or can he qualify for Kona 2013 based on those sprint times? (He may get a celebrity spot or something for all I know)

Am I the only one who thinks those times are pretty shoddy for an ex elite athlete going to kona this year? I mean I am an ex amateur rugby player, 6ft 2 and 205lbs, 35 yrs old office boy and in my 1st Tri 2 years ago of 600m, 28miles and 10k run my averages were faster than that. He's looking closer to 14hrs at kona at the moment. Running 8.30 pace for 6k is looking like one horrible marathon!

That is why I wondered what his goal was for Kona. Is it just to finish or he is truly going out to beat a time. I watched his first workout video, and yeah, he has a ways to go, but with nothing but time and PNF coaching him, he could make some real gains.

Remember, it is not like he is working 40 hours a week and trying to fit in training!

Too true.  If only I didn't have this pesky job....

You reference his "ex athlete" status, but athlete or not...he's still a first time triathlete.  The guy was a professional wide receiver.  His longest effort in a game was measured in seconds, not even in minutes.  To say that running an 8:30 pace will give him a "horrible marathon" isn't really true.  It's all about perspective.  I'm a slow runner.  For a number of reasons ranging from time to old injuries from racing motorcycles and playing football.  I would be completely happy with 8:30 miles at any distance.

Just because he was a professional athlete, doesn't give him some super ability.  Football and triathlon are two completely different animals that don't crossover well.  He has ample time, resources and coaching to get himself to where he wants to be.  His days aren't interrupted with work like most of us.

All in all, for a first time triathlete still learning the ropes...I say he did alright.  Is there room to improve?  Sure.  Will he?  I believe he will.  Will he win Kona?  Nope.  But either way, he's generating publicity for our sport and he's trying something new and foreign to him.  And for that, I say good on him!

FWIW...when the WTC and Chocolate Milk picked Hines Ward...I'm sure the decision was based 85% on his personality, name recognition, and likeability among TV viewers (ex Dancing with the Stars), and 15% because he was a former pro athlete.

If they could convince Justin Beiber (sarc? ) to do Kona...I'm sure they would have picked him instead of Ward.  I really don't think it has much to do with having a pro athlete background other than the fact that he's already in decent shape.

Hines being retired probably had a little something to do with it.

Decent times for a 37 year old first-timer who's entire life has been extremely fast fast-twitch.

Good for him.  If the logistics were doable for me, I'd totally sign up for IMKS right now just to race with him (and I'd wear some Browns gear just to show him up a little, hehe) and cheer him on.

He'd counter your Browns gear by showing you his two Super Bowl Rings.  You know, two more rings than the Browns have.  Or he can talk about the Browns 4-23 record against the Steelers when Hines played. Wink

True the Steelers have had there way with the Browns since their return but mark my word that is all about to change. The Browns are young with lots of talent and new ownership that is committed to winning. The Steelers are old on both sides of the ball and lack play makers besides Big Ben.

Unfortunately, for us, the Browns are still the Browns, and I'm pretty sure that our new front office is as clueless as any other we've had while our new owner is a Jerry Jones wanna-be.

In the past I would have agreed with you, but I really do feel a change in the air.

I'm lactose intolerant so not sure my “marketability” would be very good therefor no entry from me…

Guess my mantra could be “I love Chocolate Milk it is my after and after and after…”

Hehe!!!! Me too.  Maybe we can get a chocolate rice milk sponsorship.
