Expert 1202 Montana | Subject: Whining - I tore my ACL My season is toast, and I am going to miss triathlon training, racing, and chat. I will just have to hang out here a lot, though that may be rubbing salt in the wound! On the bright side, I do still get to swim and bike! |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Whining - I tore my ACL are you getting it reconstructed? you should be able to start swimming and biking pretty quickly. I had mine repaired in 2002. Had to miss the 2003 race reason, but all is good now |

Expert 1202 Montana | Subject: RE: Whining - I tore my ACL I saw my dr again today. He was hesitating about surgery, but I am an avid skier, and don't want to waste time 'seeing how it goes'. It will likely be a patellar graft, and I am shooting for July, because that is when it will work for me and my family. I am confident I will be able to ski, at least timidly, six months after surgery. Thankfully, I have been swimming a mile a day since the fourth day after the injury. As soon as I can make full rotations, I am getting on a bike! PT has been very good! Thanks for listening! |

You probably need 6 weeks for it to quiet down before surgery. Some people can "cope" with an ACL tear but most can't and we have no way to be able to tell who will cope and who will not. If you did not ski you might be able to get away with it but if you want to ski I would highly recommend getting it fixed. I think the oldest person I have repaired was 66. I would suggest using a allograft esp if you have to get back to work. It will drastically reduce your downtime. The healing is the same. No running or jumping for 3 months post op. If you have other question feel free to PM me |

Yesterday my ortho. surgeon said he didn't think surgery was necessary, so I'm ready to find someone who does. |

Expert 1149 CenTex | Subject: RE: Whining - I tore my ACL I've had 7 surgeries, 2 of which were reconstructions. I didn't start triathlon until after the 1st reconstruction. Since then I've done 5 HIM's, 1 IM and countless other Sprints and Oly's. As others said before me, be diligent about therapy/rehab. You won't regret it. Good luck! |

I ski I play tennis and I am sick of the brace. I want my knee fixed" i said OK. Did an allograft on her and she WALKED into my office without cructhes one day post op with little pain and did fantastic. I dont' know anyone in Montana to reccomend for you unfortuantely. I do have a uroligist friend in Helena who I could get an ortho name from if you wan and Helena is not too far from you. let me know. |

Hang in there. The key, like others have said is to find someone that will listen to your goals. I wish I would have found my third surgeon immediately after the injury and I wouldn't have had to take nine years off from triathlon. |

Expert 1202 Montana | Subject: RE: Whining - I tore my ACL Socks - thank you so much for your input! I am scheduled with a dr in Bozeman for next Friday, recommended by the physical therapist. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say. Everybody - thanks for the encouragement. I am running! Not even slowly! (For many it would be slowly, but for me it is pretty good!) |

Straight ahead activites like swimming biking and running should be fine for you just be careful where you run and to the surfaces....not too uneven no snow or ice. Contraindications to surgery would be 1-bad arthritis in your knee. 2-you don't have your motion back yet 3-Still swollen (til the swelling comes down) 4- morbid obesity 5-middle aged couch potato (which clearly you are not)
