Subject: Help Me Create a Leadman 125 Training Plan

I searched the web and the forums and couldn't really find a training plan.

I am looking to finish the Bend (my hometown!) Leadman 125. (2.5-kilometer swim • 106-kilometer bike • 16.5-kilometer run)

I have completed one half-ironman 1.5 years ago (5:38).  I focused on marathons this past season, completing one road marathon (4:19) and one trail marathon (5:07).

Logs are up-to-date.  I am not trying to be competitive or anything with this race, just want to finish as fast as I can with a smile on my face.

I can commit to training 6 days a week.  Any training plan recommendations?

Thanks.

Follow a HIM plan that you are comfortable with.  Maybe push the bike a little longer, on average.

I'm doing the 250 and putting together a plan that is bike heavy. The swim is longer but I'm not too concerned.

Since bend is your hometown, I'd get as many days climbing bachelor as possible. Have you considered adding the 70.3 from PAC crest?

I will be in the 125!

I am doing HIM training for a July HIM .  As soon as that race is complete, I am going to focus on riding and swimming and taper out my running.  If you live in Bend...you've got the perfect training ground.

I can't wait for that race and I can't wait for Electrical Engineer positions to pop up so I can move my family down there.

Of course it depends upon your goals, but the run at Bend is only 3mi less than a HIM.  I would not generally recommend 'tapering' out your running following your HIM, unless you were doing a particularly 'run heavy' training plan for that one.

So, here's what I did... because I'm a nerd.

I found a HIM plan I like- Matt Fitzgerald's Super Simple free HIM plan.

Then I found the percent differences in each disciplines distance (HIM vs 125):
Swim is +31.5%
Bike is +18%
Run is -22%

Then I went through the plan and adjusted the distance or time according to the percent difference.

What do you guys think?

x2

It takes quite a bit of run fitness to run well after such a difficult bike...even if the run is "only" 10 miles.

It takes a lot more bike fitness to be able to run 10 miles afterwards as well. That's why you'll see a lot of HIM / IM training plans so bike heavy.

No argument here. I think the OP already knew he had to bike more (likely a lot more)...but he probably wants to keep the run mileage at HIM levels instead of "tapering off."
