The Kwik Trip gas station/convenient stores here in Wisconsin/Cheeselandia sell milk in a bag.  I don't believe it's shipped from Canada, either.

I grew up on bagged milk in NW WI.  It was the best snack drink in elementary school.  Always fun to watch new kids and parents try to poke the straw in without covering the top.

Thanks for bringing back that memory.

I think you're talking about something different. The Canadian version is much larger than an individual serving size.  Here's a link that shows how milk was served at home in Ontario.  Except we didn't cut a small hole on the handle side.  Totally unnecessary doesn't begin to describe how disturbing it is to see someone cut two corners off of a milk bag like this.

I moved to Canada from NZ as a kid so I am multi-linquialWink Once I asked if someone could get something off the bench (kitchen counter) then i changed in too my togs (swimsuit) with gumboots abd ordered a flat white.  I can tell when i get the blank stare still that the wrong word has come out.

Hoos where in YYC are you?  we have a small group counting the days for OWS if interested.  I live in a Lake Community.  At this rate I am thinking late May if we are lucky.  Had a beautiful ride yesterday in Fish Creek would have been pretty slick this morning.  Hope you weren't having to travel Deerfoot.

We're up in Bearspaw (in the NW, between Calgary and Cochrane).  Most riding is on country roads around here which are very popular with cyclists anytime it gets warm.

Obviously haven't braved OWS yet this year, but my wife and I both just bought wetsuits and looking forward to some OWS practice.  We're both signed up for the Chinook 51.5 and hoping to try them out before race day (if it ever stops snowing!)

DanielG - 2013-04-03 5:35 AM A guy said that at work during one of the break room meetings. I said, "Not like it's obvious you're Canadian or anything" He has been trying his damnedest to clean up his slang and colloquialisms but every once in a while... He gives me garbage for "buggy" being one of those four wheeled things you put groceries in when at a grocery store.

Hah! I've never heard the bag of milk before, but buggy, I know that.

Burrrrrr with the Chinook race.  Hopefully we have a warm spring.  I am doing the Chapparel Oly later in August.  Might have to come cheer you all on in June as I live in Sundance right next door to Midnapore.  As long as it isn't too cold to stand outside.......kidding I am sure it will be great.  I imagine they usually wear wetsuits?  Chapparel is "not usually" wetsuit compliant they say for the Oly but I am hoping that this year we can have the option.

I often think that the colloquialisms are more regional. I haven't heard of a lot of this Eastern Canadian slang, but understand people from California perfectly. Cool

Here's one though: toque. It's perfect. Much better than winter hat. There can be lots of winter hats, but only 1 toque!

Jeng -- you haven't heard of this slang?  It's the sign of a bad education -- go back to Grade 12 and get higher marks!  Otherwise you'll end up on pogey  Smile

One word that took me by surprise me in the US was "lineup".  Evidently in the US this only refers to suspects at a police station, not a queue at the bank.

Purestone -- Chinook will almost certainly be wetsuit legal / mandatory.  Last year I heard the water temperature was 20C, which wouldn't be too bad -- when I did Banff, it was ~15C -- brrrr!   Stupid glacier-fed lakes....

My mother used to stop at the dairy near her office on her way home on Thursdays. She was our virtual milkman, picking up bagged milk for about 4-5 other families in town. We had half gallon bags, in a pitcher with a slit. This was he early 1980s.

That cture that Hoos posted is of an item I still buy. For balloon artists, that is the perfect clipper for cutting off a balloon to make sculptures.

Yeah toque! that one often gets questions from non-Canadians. It does perfectly describe a knit winter hat.

Anyone who hasn't watched Bob and Doug Mckenzie, in any case

I can never remember which is the ski mask and which is the Greek dessert, though.

We haven't even gotten into the wonders of Quebec English yet...

"Do I take the autoroute or the metro to go from my CEGEP to the depanneur?"

This would probably confused even the Ontarians...!

I'm old.  When I was a kid milk can in glass bottles and was delivered before sun up by the milkman making his rounds.

I think that was phased out by the 70's gas crisis.

Born and raised in BC (Greater Vancouver) and I remember the bagged milk as a kid.  Trick was to put it in the jug/holder BEFORE cutting the corners off....

drfoodlove - 2013-04-03 9:29 AM We lived in Montreal for two years...spent the whole time b!t@/!ng about milk in a bag and what a pain in the butt it was. About six months AFTER we moved back to the States we found out about the line of equipment associated with the milk in a bag phenomenon. Somehow, I feel like that should have been included in the "orientation to Canada" we received at work.

So you mean you never had one of these?

Nope! But it sure would have come in handy!
