Subject: Open Water Swim

I'm doing my first Tri on June 1 (Tri The Parks- Blalock Lakes). I have never done an open water swim. Where is a good place (Atlanta Area/North of Atl) to get a couple open water swims in before my race?

Thanks.

Mary Alice Park in Cumming is pretty good. Also, I think one of the local teams or coaches was doing organized OW swims at Lake Allatoona but I'm not sure when. Maybe it was posted on here? I can't remember.

Unless you have a wetsuit (which you won't need in June) I'd wait until late April or early May because the water is still COLD!

Redtop Mountain state park - Lake Allatoona. Park and swim at the lodge - they have a nice protected cove to swim in, and great trails to run afterward. You also have access to some really great riding from there - you can ride right out of the park, or a lot of folks shoot up a few exits north and ride from the Budweiser Plant (usually what we do). There are also organized swims there usually twice per month (Swim with Pete). The next one is April 13th at 9:00am. They will have race buoys and kayakers in the water for safety. Get there early to sign in (Pete looks to get going promptly at 9 - you don't want to get yelled at). And tip the kayakers - we usually do 5 bucks per swimmer.

Mary Alice Park on Lake Lanier is OK as well - it is not as well sheltered, but has a nice set of no-wake buoys and a roped swim boundary that are always in place so you can get some good sighting practice.

Yeah, those crazy nuts have been swimming at Red Top since the beginning of March - water temps were in the mid 40s when they started supposedly. I think Pete may actually require wetsuits at least until the end of this month. Water at Allatoona should be at full pool this week, and water temps have jumped 10 degrees in the past week - now at 60 degrees.

I just checked, in addition to the swim on the 13th there is also one on the 27th (same day as John Tanner, unfortunately).

There will be two lifeguards on a Standup paddle board and kayak for safety. The cost is $35 for the whole summer (we pay the lifeguards) PM me if you have questions

I'd like to do that soon as I've never actually been into the store! When I said 'we' I didn't actually mean me as I'll be racing in Columbus.  I'll be sure to mention that your store is nearby in case anyone has any last-minute equipment needs...

Start at the main beach and head straight across to the boat ramp then head back. Round trip is about 1500 yards. There are no boats either, which is nice!
