Pre-race routine:

the usual: up @ 4AM, coffee and oatmeal then out the door. It was not a bad drive to Quincy and Mike drove. That's a huge help. Stopped at DD for another coffee.
Event warmup:

Nada. But of course after all that coffee and a bottle of water a need to use the porta potty. We were supposed to meet up with Kathy, Emily and Patty around 7:15 but instead I was standing in a HUGE line for the porta potties. I lasted abotu 3 minutes and was just too fidgety to stand there. Instead I waited for the race announcer to tell everyone it was time to get ready to start. Now the women would be flying out of the porta potties and I could make my move! Sure enough, I was in there when I heard "30 seconds left" over the loud speaker. I raced out, over the fence, and landed right next to Kathy and Emily just as the runners started moving. Perfect!

Comments:

I thought I had gone out too fast for the first mile. I was pretty sure I would not be able to keep that up for 5 more miles. Somewhere during mile 2 May found me. I was told later that she was perched in a light pole looking for familiar faces ....not really sure about that, but she did find me!

Instead of maintaining that pace, I actually got a little faster. There is NO WAY IN HELL I coulda done that without you May! We chatted a little as we ran too, so I knew if I could still talk it couldn't be all THAT bad. Considering I've been between 12 and 14 minute miles during training, 10 and a half minute miles is blazing for me!
What would you do differently?:

Not be in the porta potty when the race is about to start. That way I could run from the very beginning with May kicking my ass!
Post race
Warm down:

stopped moving. It's all good. I put ice in my Mooseman hat and let it melt on me until it was gone. Poor Patty thought I was still sweating up a storm 20 minutes later! LOL

What limited your ability to perform faster:

cranky knees.

Event comments:

The founder of Iron Girl Judy Molnar is a friend of my friend Donna. She tried to break into the tri scene with the Reebok series a few years ago but it just never caught on. Maybe running races will work out better for her. I have to say that this event was wonderful. LOTS of great post-race food and drink, raffles and awards. Kudos to Judy.

You were so fast today Ellen! You have made incredible progress over the last few months....

It was a fun upbeat affair with nice perks after...but I wish they started the 5 and 10K's at different times and did real chip timing.

It was great to see you today...awesome!
