I think we'll be having a later than normal "Ice Out" this year on the city lakes.  I drive by Calhoun most days and the last time I was by there was still an awful lot of ice.  Here's what I found on the DNR web site.  Boy, the weather must have been super crappy in 1965!!!

Lake name: Calhoun
Median ice out date: April 10
Earliest ice out date: Thursday, March 09, 2000
Latest ice out date: Wednesday, April 28, 1965
Period of record: 1946 to 2012

By the way, in 2012 the ice out for Calhoun was March 18th!   After a very unofficial look back at the years, last year was VERY VERY early.   That probably explains why Nokomis felt like bath water as early as July 4th.

The Official Ice out for my backyard Ice rink was yesterday....

Now, who's going to take the first swim in a lake this year ??  My money is on Me-Xman or Foggy.....

I drive by Calhoun a lot too and today I really noticed how blue the ice was, compared to the normal white.  Now that a snow storm is coming it will probably thicken up again, ug.

If my new wetsuit comes soon I'll jump in asap, I love the cold!

Last year was CRAZY!

The dates this year are looking a bit more like 2011 and things did eventually get summery, so there's hope...

Usually swimming on Memorial Day weekends is VERY cold, but after that we forget and jump right in.

Normally I'm in the lake real early, especially last year with Alcatraz training.  This year we've still got enough ice that I saw folks driving 4-wheelers on it Sunday.  Someone told me something crazy like 15-18 inches still on our bigger lakes up here.  Between the ice and a shoulder injury I don't think I'll be in the lakes anytime soon.

I remember last year when Queerdrummer and someone else went for an early very VERY cold swim.   Also,  Bikergirrrrrl  I'll meet you as soon as there's enough open water to swim....  We can GoPro it...

I can't wait until I can get into the open water.  I checked my logs and I did my first OWS May 2nd last year.    I just saw the current forecast is 13-14 inches of snow between now and Thursday night  Yell

I am signed up for Blaine on May 18th. 5 and a half weeks away and the lake is still frozen. Wondering if that swim will happen.

If I recall that is the same weekend as GW Du and Albert lea tri. Last year that particular day was very cold. Like colder then in march and April. Weird year. There might be some race reports for Albert lea worth reading. Granted Blaine is farther north. It's going to be a cold swim, that is for sure

We might have tied the record for April 28! I ran over to Harriet on Friday and there was still ice on 90% of the lake.  I biked by Calhoun and Nakomis on Sunday and there was no ice!  Not sure if ice out was Saturday or Sunday, though.

I experienced a similar thing with Cedar.   10AM bike ride on Saturday, thin layer of ice nearly to the edge.   5PM bike Sunday, no ice.    What a nice weekend!   It still feels like going past an open refrigerator door, though, so the water is still obviously quite cold.

I drive by Lake Marion (Lakeville) on my way to work.  It's at about 20% ice on the surface...pretty late ice out.  Bryan, why don't you try out the wetsuit  this weekend and let us know how it works for you?  :-

I was going to move my bike inside (again) and then decided on a new rule:  no trainer after April 30th.   Thus, no ride.  And I am ok with that!

I'd never ride if I said that :D

I ride indoors every morning, year round. Although I could do without looking outside and seeing 4 inches of snow like I did today for a little while. At least a month, maybe...
