Subject: Bike routes in Clermont

I'll be in the Orlando area this weekend again for another conference.  I would really like to get out for a ride Friday morning.  Looking for something in the 35-40 mile range.  I keep hearing about how great Clermont is to ride, but I'm not finding any posted routes.  Anybody have one the like and know is safe?

Thanks

There are several great resources for bike routes in Clermont. One is TriFlorida.com, they have a HIM coing up and the course maps are there. Their route includes Sugarloaf.

The fine folks at West Orange Wheel Works just took part in the 2013 Winter Garden Bike Fest. Here is the link to the routes: http://www.wgwheelworks.com/Bike-Fest.html

Also try Tower Triathlon Club https://www.facebook.com/TowerTriathlonClub)which is located in Clermont

The last is the local "love them or hate them" type of bike group, the Windermere Roadies. It is one of the oldest in the area, (www.WindermereRoadies.com)

Good luck, and let us all know where you went on your rides.

Thanks for the links.  Send a message to the Tower Tri Club.  I also played around with the course map for the IM 70.3 in Haines City and was able to map out a 40 mile ride.  Is that course good, bad, rough, scenic, congested?

I have not been on the entire IMHC bike course, but I know it is much flatter then Clermont. I am sure if you do some poking around BT or via your favorite search engine you will find reviews of the HC bike course.

I would recommend the the first lap of the Great Floridian course - 38 miles and includes Sugarloaf. The map is on the website Mark noted. Only kind of hairy spot is the trip up SR19. Lots of trucks, but the shoulder is wide/paved well/smooth. The rest of the course is fairly rural/quiet. Also if you want extra challenge, you can add an out and back on Dewey Robbins or add a loop around Buckhill.
Find it at http://www.greatfloridian.com/Portals/2/Images/maps/GFT%20BIKE%20-%...

IMHO, the Haines City course is a good ways from Clermont, pretty (very) rural in most places, and not as challenging - rode it last year for the inagural 70.3.

You might also call Gear for Multisport at the Training Center in Clermont. The owners are in tune with who is in town training and might be able to help you join a ride that is planned for Friday.

I ride these roads all the time and feel pretty safe. YMMV.

Just road Haines City this past weekend.  Not much traffic, decent roads.  But it is a bit hilly for us flat landers

I wanted to post a follow up to my request.  First I want to thank everyone for the ideas, it great having a place like BT to go to with questions.  I went to the BT Routes section and typed in Clermont.  Several courses came up.  The one I liked was titled The Hills of Clermont, a 31+ mile ride that I think found EVERY hill in a 15 mile radius of the small town of Monteverde.  I then figured out how to create a route on Garmin Connect and then upload the route to my 310XT.  When ride day came, Friday morning, I drove out to Kirk Park, pulled up the route and headed out.  What an awesome ride!!!  Just like Duane said, that's more hills than us west coast, island riding, flat landers are used to.

If you're on the West Coast, go up to Pasco Co. into Dade City and ride the Hilly Hundred route.  No "big" climbs like Sugarloaf, but it's all classic rolling hills for about 90 out of the 100 miles.  Maybe 5000-6000 feet vertical in 100 miles I think.  Park at the hospital, the road markers are there, you want the gold arrows I think.  Dig around online and see if you can find any route sheets.  That's what I did and when I was training for my hilly ride in France I rode Dade City and a lot of Clermont....the Dade City route was actually better training IMHO.
