Danskin Women's Triathlon
Total Time = 1h 33m 19s
Overall Rank = 610/3620
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 99/379
Pre-race routine:

breakfast at hotel: mini wheats coffee banana
set up transition area, walked to swim start, milled around and saw tons of people I knew, including AJFreddy. warmed up in the water, peed about 45 times. Saw lauren Jensen kick ass on the final run leg while waiting for my wave. peed some more
Event warmup:

not much. autumn spotted me right as our wave was going in, so we chatted and got through the last 4 min of pre reace jitters. SO COOL to see her! squated and peed again while waiting for Sally Edwards to go through her schpiel. (my secret word was "outstanding."
Swim
  • 13m 41s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

I sighted quite poorly. the sun was right in my eyes, and I think I assumed that it would be easy since it was a point to poinht, but I zigged a bit and had to zag back. also, in spite of the 4 min time between waves, there were bodies EVERYWHERE, so I did a lot of swimming around random people as though in an obstacle course
What would you do differently?:

sight better. but this was 3 minutes faster than last year, so I am pleased
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

GRRR! I couldn;t find my bike! I borrowed a Trek demo bike ( a real tri bike, woo woo) and had a tough time spotting it. it was a LONG run with the bike to the exit. no wetsuit made it easy :)
What would you do differently?:

run through the T area a few times in the morning to get it in muscle memory if not brain memory
Bike
  • 41m 59s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.72 mile/hr
Comments:

I got to ride the Equinox again, but unlike last year, when I was a weaker cyclist, the gains didn;t seem so hot. I actually had the EXACT same time as last year! I think I am a much faster biker this year, smarter too, and also much more "like one" with my road bike, and I should have ridden it. The fit with the equinox was weak, just a seat height adjustment was made, and while i had an easy start to my run (legs felt fine!) my quads burned the whole ride. And believe it or not, I get lower riding in my drops on my road bike than the way the equinox was set up! So I dunno. It was another experiment, I guess. I had no watch, no HRM, no bike computer, so it was all by feel, which makes me think I could have gone a bit harder had I known where I was in the course. It was incredibly miserably windy from mile 8 on, so the last bit was way slower than the first
What would you do differently?:

not much, I learned a lot. I think I am done experimenting though. NO riding a bike I haven;t become ONE with! (with which I haven;t yet become ONE)
Transition 2
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

it's tough to mauever a tri bike through a jam packed T area full of clueless people running around.. I LOVE my new speedlaces
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 31m 45s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

weak. I felt like I was doing a nice 10 pace. It was kind of hot, but still, I felt better than that time reflects. I did take 3 1 minute walk breaks, but I always do, so I dunno what happened.
What would you do differently?:

? wear a watch? nah, it's more fun without stressing out about time
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

fitness deficit, not enough preparation

Event comments:

danskin is always fun. I am encouraged that my swim was faster than last year, I ran a lot more than I did last year )last year ITBS had me walking from the start) but a bit disappointed in the bike. I have imporved tremendously from last year, but my time didn;t reflect that.

Way to go at Danskin! Do you think the speedlaces are a good investment? I'm thinking about getting some.

Nice race!  You are such a fast swimmer.  Too bad about the bike.  Now see, everyone made fun of me for doing the balloon on the bike rack thing at Danskin last year, but it really helped find my spot in that sea of bikes.

WOW Possum, your swim time blows me away.  And you are speedy as heck on that bike.  When are you coming to Racine so we can ride?

GREAT RACE

hollis, it was SO cool meeting you. since my aunt and mom were together, and my cousins were together, you were like my adopted sister for 10 minutes. thanks for hanging out with me, and warming the waters...oh, i mean warming the cockles of my heart

we should find a good race midway between st. paul and madison to meet up at. one with more port-a-ports and a smaller transition area

Good job Hollis! I have a very small picture of you on the bike as you were heading away (damn digital camera turned off on me!). I thought I spotted you on the run (it was somebody else), Meg was only 10 feet from us and I am looking aways back. She had to jump in front of me and wave her arms so we could cheer her on. I got to try on of the Trek carbon bikes years ago for an 75 mile ride but was so used to my steel and too big Bianchi that I wanted my heavy bike back so I know what you mean about being One with Your bike. We all had a great time thanks to you telling us about the race. Meg was considering doing the Spirit of Racine Sprint (until she learned how long the swim is). Let me know if you see the dates for next years Danskin, we had a great hotel a couple miles from the race and want to get reservations there again. Again, Good job and thanks for the help and inspiration for Mrs. Zaboo.

Totally! Bummer that the bike time doesn't reflect the work you've put into it, but one race isn't really indicative of a whole season of work. And, shoot -- you're a fast swimmer!!!

Awesome race!!

How fun you found Autumn and helped each other get rid of any prerace jitters!

You placed top third almost top 25% and you say ...come on you did well...improved a ton in the swim, ran well, disappointed in your bike...speedy and tons of women on the road.

Being one with your bike makes a huge difference and you'll get there soon! Were you riding your normal bike?

This is not a race but more a women event...I think you told me that....in my complaining about Irongirl 5K I did last weekend.

Fabulous race! I guess you were in the wave in front of me ... I caught some of those yellow caps but with that swim time I definitely didn't catch you!!

I'm with you on the comment about lots of clueless people in the transitions, I had someone plop down right in the middle of the aisle as I was running through with my bike and I had to actually lift my bike over her!! I totally appreciated that it was beginners and all but I just didn't want to wipe out and show my newbieness

sorry we couldn't all meet - maybe next year!
