Saw someone recommending bag balm as an alternative to chamois cream in another thread.  Tonight I lubed up generously before getting on the trainer for a good 1 hr ride (Sufferfest-Wretched).  Couldn't be more comfy, is this stuff waterproof enough to hang during an Oly swim without a wetsuit?  I think that reapplying some balm to the nether regions in T1 may not be appreciated by fellow racers.

Could you supply more details?

I think Daniel said it stays on pretty well in his chamois cream roundup. Honestly, I think most of us are pretty busy in T1 and not paying attention to anyone else. On the other hand, spectators with cameras could capture you for posterior-ty.

I've used it for IM's and a 230 mile bike ride. Just a little bit seems to work for me even over IM distance.

I use Bag Balm for any ride that lasts over an hour and a half.  Used it for my HIM last year, just grabbed a big scoop in T1 and stuck my hand down my shorts to apply it.  Your fellow racers will be doing the same, or won't notice or care.  Spectators, on the other hand, might wonder what the heck you're doing - but I doubt it will be the most disgusting thing they see all day.

Bag balm holds up just fine through an IM. It is all I use on long rides and races.  It is messy but gets the job done.  If I am just going out for 1:30 or less, I will just use chamois creme.

Just don't leave the lid off of it...for some reason dogs love to eat it *GROSS*  Had two different dogs dive head first into a can!

OK, I read many threads about this, but I dont seem to have a problem and certainly have not smeared cream on myself for a ride.  Am i doing something wrong? Am I lucky? Is it a statement of my manh....well, nevermind.Embarassed

Having diaper clad children has its benefits I have used triple action diaper paste, it is odorless and waterproof.  It isn’t however cheap, I am sure you could slather on the desitin if you didn’t mind the minty scent.

If you don't chafe, ignore the threads and be glad you don't have that issue.

Some don't.

Yes this works very very well!

Well at least from the other side of the street.

I used bag balm on my son when he was in diapers.  It did seem to hang in there pretty well but I don't know how full immersion in a swim would go.

I've used bag balm up to HIM distance and only apply prior to the swim. I've never had any issues with it staying effective for a several hour ride post-swim. I do have a couple of small packets of cream in my flat kit, just in case I really need it.

I've done many 100 mile bikes with no "balm" then one faithful day I got a saddle sore in the chamois region. Having a Doc inspect and pop said saddle sore was not a highlight in list of activities in that area to say the least. Took about a year for the lingering pain to go away. During that time I tried many products, Bag Balm stood above them all and I've not had a repeat visit to the Doc.

Wow, I didnt realize this was as big an issue as it is.  I will be thankful its not an issue for me and hope it never is one!

If you start getting sore spots that don't seem to go away, you might want to at least consider using some and seeing if that takes care of it.

I would highly recommend Assos Chamois Cream if you're already getting sore spots. It cleared mine up before anything went very far.

Some riders who have tried using Bag Balm as a daily crotch lubricant report an adverse skin reaction.

Any reason I should switch from my Assos to this stuff?

Nope. Use whatever keeps you from developing hot spots, costs within your ability to pay and doesn't smell you out of the house.

Absolutely no issues with balm bag for IM (did that with wetsuit) and HIM without a wetsuit---just applied pre-race and forgot about it.

Don't have cats/dogs BUT will warn to leave the can "upright" if in the car on a warm/hot day as it melts....yeah I learned that after just throwing it in the car before a ride---had to put it back upright and leave it there for a couple more hours to settle back into the bottom of the can.............................
