I have a friend...

No really,

I have a friend who is running their first HIM in less than two weeks (IM NOLA 70.3) and for the first time she is getting negative about her training evolutions.

Well that was a $h!ty run fast 3 then walk…

So I will be in the same situation as my “friend” and wondered if there is any HELP with the taper and the mental aspect of “taking it easy” and preparing for race day.

My thought (and my plan at this point) is to practice the transitions during the taper phase and busy myself with equipment prep and checklist…

Any ideas to help her and me…

Taper rage.... Only so much you can do about it.

Like you said, I enjoy fiddling with my bike, making final travel plans, getting gear together and practicing transitions.

Go sit on the porch on a nice day in the sun with a beer/wine...sit back and just let your mind go blank...

Tapering- well, the other side of that is powering through the taper, doing too much and then having a bad race. Trust the taper. If your friend is following a plan, ask her does she think she's the only Triathlete ever to follow such a plan that included a tapering? There's a reason for it.

And try to remember that you've done all the work to get you to the start.  You can't change it - set realistic expectations for the day and be happy with that. Anything you do in taper isn't going to make or break your race overall.

My swim coach noticed I was being extra hard on myself in the weeks leading up to IM - and she gave me a perspective check (remember where you started) and to work on making my race day about my race day - not a time, not a place relative to others ... it really helped.  I kept thinking of my IM as my 'Ironman Day' like my birthday or something ... silly but it worked!

Person Experience/Personal Opinion:  I always felt best in my taper and happier with my results when I went to perceived effort workouts in my last week or two. Ex: 30 minute run, easy or 40 minute bike, light effort.  It also helped for me to focus on things like form or cadence during my workouts; so while I may not have felt like I did enough in quantity measures, I felt like I had advanced myself towards my goal/upcoming race.

Unfortunately, and what makes endurance sports fun, it's different for everybody.
