Subject: PTTD anyone?

Have some ... "discomfort" on the underside toward the back of the medial malleolus, the inside ankle bone.  Noticed it Tuesday morning, ran on it, and the discomfort went away about a mile in.  Not really pain, very mild.  Area seems consistent with PTTD but I have no pain inverting the foot, or doing one legged heel raises, so wonder if it is something less serious.....

And I am trying to get into my regular PT for an official diagnosis, but right now looking at *May* so need a new PT that isn't as good obivously....

I don't know much about PTTD specifically, but with any tendon inflammation in general, I can't imagine it getting better as you run.

If I'm understanding you post, since the run there's no pain?  Swelling?

If not, my best guess (as not a PT but as an oft injured athlete Wink) is that it was a little tightness that relieved itself as you began to move it.

If it doesn't become worse, swollen or enough of a discomfort to even slow you down between now and your appointment try giving it special attention when you stretch and cancel the appointment!

Yeah, you'd think I've run out of tendons to strain i've done it so much!  No real pain since the run, just discomfort, if that makes sense.  No swelling.  I hope to snag a cancellation but will monitor it closely.

If you think it is posterior tibialis tendonitis be very careful.  If it were to rupture we really don't have a great surgery for it.  Better to let things settle down

Thanks Sue, Got a PT appt Monday.  Won't be doing any running until then and we'll go from there

From my reading I don't think it is (perhaps just hopeful thinking), none of the mechanical tests produce any pain and sensation seems to be more toward the front of the MM, but no idea what else is in that area and I am certainly no doc .  I have very high arches as well, FWIW.

Could be tibialis anterior.  Hope its not a stress fx in the medial malleolus

I would think that a stress fx wouldn't feel better as a run went on?

I thought this was going to be about Post Traumatic Triathlon Disorder after a bad race.

Sue, you may recall you referred me to a friend of yours out here, that helped out with my peroneal tendonitis a couple years back.

If not advanced, as I don't think mine is if that is truly what it is, is PTTD resolveable as with other tendons if treated properly, i.e. rest, ice, PT, etc.?  My tendon issues always resolve with time if I am patient, but most of the sites I read about deal with the aftermath of surgery (which totally spins me out....)

Thanks

Chris,

I'd be very interested in hearing how you resolved your peroneal tendonitis, but I don't want to hijack this thread...so I'll PM you instead. Thanks!

I've been battling posterior tibial tendonitis since September (!). I Didn't go to the ortho doc until January. Mine was very advanced. I was in a boot and on crutches for a month. And from February until this past Wednesday was doing PT twice a week.

The verdict? It's MUCH better, but not perfect. I'm just getting back into jogging...but it will be a slow buildup. My ortho has cautioned me numerous times that I can't re-injure it...or I'm likely to rupture/tear it and end up on his operating table. Yikes.

Erin

PS- If you can do a one-legged calf raise with the uncomfortable leg...then I'd guess it's not PTTD, or (if it is) it's very minor. When I had my first ortho appointment...he asked me to go up on my toes...and I laughed at him. After 3.5 months of PT...one-legged calf raises are just now possible again.
