Me!  I've never done it before (first year of triathlon), but hear they put on a good race.

Yes, looking forward to it. I'm doing he Olympic distance this year (I did the sprint last year). The one complaint is that "lake" Caroline is a essentially a large drainage ditch. The bike course is nice and the run course, though repetitive is fairly flat. Should be a relatively fast course.

Plan your packet pick up accordingly on Saturday and watch the ITU guys and gals race.  Good stuff!

This is the only race I dropped last year due to an injury and it's not fitting on my calendar this year.  Really hate that!

This was a great race last year.  As at least one other mentioned, this course is very flat (bike and run)...a few small rollers on the bike, but I found it to be fast.  It is a funny little spot for an open water swim, too.

If you're doing the sprint, be prepared to wait around for a while for the start, though.  You can hang out at the hotel that the race surrounds.

I won't be doing it this year because of schedule, but would if I could!

i registered early to take advantage of the pricing.  playtri events ain't cheap!  i didn't do it last year because it was the same weekend as the mansfield sprint tri, and i wanted my loyalties to lie w/ good ol jack.

this was my very first event in 2011 when i was new to tri's, so i'll like comparing my time this year to back then.  i had to walk on the 5k!

took my family to watch this one last year on saturday because my girlfriend had never seen one operate.  it's nice because you can watch everything within about 100 ft of each other.  very spectator friendly.  one of the best i've seen as far as that goes.

Doing the Olympic distance race!

It will be my second Oly distance in 8 years of racing. I've done more IM's and HIM's than Oly's. Ha! I actually kind of hate the distance. Can't really pace it like a long distance race, and can't pace it like a sprint. Weird distance for me.

This will be my first oly distance, interested to see how it goes. Guess I need to do some of my longer runs in the heat.

Karen- that is very interesting and I never thought of an Oly race that way.  Can you describe more what you mean about why it is difficult for you to pace it?  This will be my first Oly so I am interested in what new challenges I will have.  Thanks!

Search Olympic pacing strategy on slowtwitch and the general guidance is "suicide". The race is "too short" to slow down and get into a rhythm, but long enough where going fast over the entire distance is hard / painful.

That's about right....it's like running the 800m in track.  Very little strategy other than go.

I can't imagine how you race a sprint of you think "suicide" on an oly.

I'd be curious how other people handle it. I just think 10k pace in my head, all three disciplines slightly hurt, breathing is a bit ragged but definitely not pushing it until the last 3 miles.

Hate Oly swim distance but love Oly Bike and Run distance.  Like you said 2.5 hours of just under LT.

This is the best Playtri race and one of the top 5 in DFW area.

I signed up tonight and this will be my first Olympic Distance Race.  I am using this race as a prep day for the Racine Half-Ironman in July.  I could not believe that the host hotel (Marriott) had rooms discounted for $77.00 a night, big plus for me.

I live in the area and while the location is good for a race, it is not exactly a happening part of town (not much dining, things to do at night, etc). I imagine that hotel stays at about 50% occupancy unless there is a major convention at the convention center 1 block away.

With a sprint you should pace it all out. My motto for sprints is "there is no breathing in a sprint"! Ha! My quads will burn on the bike and my HR will be in zone 5 (seriously) for the run. I go all out.

For a HIM I pace it... I know how to pace it so I can save some for the run. No quads burning on the bike and my HR zone is not past 2 on the run.

For an Oly you want to push it a little, but not too much. So it's this weird middle between a sprint and a Oly. Just not a pacing I'm use to. I'm use to all out or holding back. For me, I am not good and pushing it a little, but not too much. I would guess I'm going to push it on the swim (my strength), try to hold back a little on the bike, and then run in zones 2 and 3 for the run.

Each person is different. You might find the Oly distance to be a great fit and not challenging pacing wise.

This is where a power meter comes in very handy, if you can afford one.

Thanks Karen.  Interesting food for thought.  This is my first Oly and I am officially registered so no turning back now!

As others said it depends on the person. If you have been training as your A-race being a HIM or IM you should have a little better stamina and may be able to push it up a zone. Also remember nutrition, you should be able to get away with a gel pack or just a single bottle on the bike as long as you eat properly that morning.

Either way it is going to suck so accept it and enjoy it once it is all done! From the reports last year it was hot so be sure to hydrate the days coming up to the race with something with electrolytes.

Good luck everyone!

Swimming is not normally allowed in the lake that we will be in, and it looks to be pretty small.

Does anyone have any experience in this lake? Any pointers or tips?

Maybe if you work near there take some pictures so those of us from out of town have an idea of what we will be swimming in.

Thanks!

I don't live terribly close and am never in that part of town so I can't help you out with any pictures, but in looking at a google aerial image and then the swim course map, this could be a very interesting swim. I am more use to an out and back via a triangle or a rectangle, not a weird multi-turning course like this one. I can foresee some congestion around the turns because it does not look like a large lake at all.
