I finished Stage 3 this morning.  Stage 2 was rough....fell apart a bit through the last climb.  But rallied for Stage 3....whew!

The TR guys did a really great job making these rides, developing the story lines, and putting together the challenge.  I'm really looking forward to what the next five stages bring.  It's kind of fun (nerve wracking??) having no idea what the ride profile is going to look like until moments before riding it.

Stage 2 left me in a puddle of sweat and suffering.  And four new PR's.

First time for everything I guess... Went to redo my FTP this morning, as I was warming up and a few minutes away from doing the actual 20min FTP my rear tire delaminated and the tread came right off the casing... Never had that happen before. The tire I was using has seen maybe 300 outdoor miles, looks nearly new. It has seen a lot of trainer miles over the last 4 months. Taking the bike off the trainer and swapping tires took up the rest of my time this morning. Will try to do the FTP test again this evening and I've ordered a trainer specific tire I'll use going forward.

When the tire started to come apart I though the hub in the wheel had finally gone. It's an older wheel that I used to use for Cyclocross and winter training. I've replaced the rim a couple of times and the hub is getting near end of life.

Updated FTP 292
At the start of the challenge 258

On my first test I had our CompuTrainer set in ERG mode where it constantly changes the resistance to match the target wattage. Think that keep my results lower. For this test I used the same bike but did the Sufferfest Rubber Glove test and put the CompuTrainer in Slope mode where its up to you to hold the target wattage.

I retested my FTP using Sufferfest's new Rubber Glove video the other day as well.  It was the first time doing a 20 minute test that I was fairly pleased with how I paced it.  Normally, I seem to target too big a number, go out too hard, and just can't hang on.

This time, I started a bit below where I wanted to be for the first five minutes, worked my way up to and held my target for the next ten minutes, bumped it up for the next few minutes, and then gave it all I had left for the last two minutes.  And finally, for the first time ever, I didn't lose it at the end!

However, I do think my target power was a little on the low side and that I actually could have pushed a little more.  Of course, my ~5% increase in FTP will hurt sufficiently in my upcoming TrainerRide workouts....so I might actually have been disappointed if I'd targeted my true FTP

Increased from 190W to 201W -- will test again probably in July.

I've done a few TrainerRoad workouts post my update FTP, tis hard. Interested to see if I get fitter/used to greater effort over the next 4 weeks or so.

Sooooo...I'm a little late getting back here. I have not spent any time on the trainer since this started. I got myself a shiny new power tap G3 wheel! is it ok to continue with this using my numbers from outdoor work? or is that cheating...?

So I retested in the middle of April and my FTP estimated from a 20 minute test was roughly 300 watts, though at the time, my legs were shot as I was at the peak of my training volume. This is where things stood around mid May, again during my highest volume week. The dark black line is the one for that ride.

May curve photo MayPowerCurve_zpsba04f4d3.jpg

20 minute power of around 350 watts, FTP estimated by golden cheetah at 337 watts. Weight dropped from 190lbs. to 185lbs.

I've been tapering for a stage race since then. I'll retest around mid June.

Spring's over and I just raced today. Conveniently I finished in nearly exactly 1 hour with a NP of 351 watts. I'm down to 183 lbs also.

That puts my FTP/Kg at around 4.22 for the end of the challenge.

Have not done my final FTP test yet. Raced on the 13th, racing tomorrow night and maybe racing again on Saturday. If my maybe Saturday turns into going to the Sounders game instead, then I'll do my final FTP test that morning.

Was just looking at my TrainerRoad numbers, without the final FTP test I'm at
FTP from 258 to 292
Workouts 19
TSS 1414
Time on Trainer 1414 mins (ya that's just over 23 and half hours...)
FTP/KG from 2.92 to 3.39
Weight from 195lbs to 190lbs

I know I'm getting faster. I'm starting to get close Cat'ing up on the track (velodrome) from Cat 3 to Cat 2. I'd be there if not for a crash, couple mechanical issues, and not making all of the races in the series.
