Subject: Diagnosis me....possible stress fracture?
I ran a half marathon last weekend.  During the race, I felt great, but within an hour of coming home, the back/side of my ankle ached.  I just took ibuprofen because all of me was sore, and didn't think any more about it.  It was fine on Sunday.  On Monday when I returned to work, I noticed it aching again.  I decided not to run, and swam instead.  Tuesday it was still aching, so I tried ice, complete rest, and more ibuprofen.  Wednesday it was still aching, and starting to spread further up my ankle.  I decided it was probably an inflamed tendon, so I busted out my KT tape and taped it according to a YouTube video.  This helped somewhat.  It was feeling a little better, so I decided to try a nice and easy slow run.  DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!  It hurt the whole time and has been worse since I got home.  That was yesterday morning.  I now have slight numbness below it, pain at the specific spot, and can actually feel the sensation of bones rubbing together.  HELP!

If it were me I'd see my doctor at this point.

Sounds like you need surgery.  Go see a doctor.

See a Dr. immediately! You're describing a stress fracture of the fibula. I had that and kind of did what you did... over a year later and I'm still struggling. The problem with the fibula is that you carry relatively small load on it, so you can really do some damage before you notice anything (especially triathletes that are used to have aches and pains all over from general training...). In my case, I raced almost an entire season with this stress fracture.

End result, 10 weeks in an aircast, no biking, no running, swimming after 4 weeks of healing... only saving grace was that it was the end of season. Like I said, over a year later, I still have to be careful with running, especially multiple days of distance.

Immediate surgery?  LOL.

On the other hand, shut it down. Not sure what drove you to go on achy body parts. Why not take a week off?  Two?  Was the workout that important?  That's your introspective question.

And tri, on the whole, is an interesting community - we think we can manage and fix anything, there's so much documentation on people being their own doc, and anecdotally getting better.  Kinesio tape like the TDF boys, with dedicated doctors. Compression sleeves and patt straps like the pros.

Sometimes it just takes time, and sometimes it takes an expert. Listen to your body.  That said, hope you heal well...sorry to hear your pain.

I went to a dr who did X-rays and it turns out it is NOT a stress fracture, but a very inflamed perineal tendon. I have strict orders for at least two weeks of no running, though I can still bike a swim, and then slowly back into it. Lots of ice, rest, etc in the meantime. I lucked out in going to this new dr, turns out he's a triathlete as well

Not saying your problems aren't from an inflamed perineal tendon but you normally don't see stress fractures on x-rays.

I agree with the fact you don't usually see stress fractures on X-rays, I've had three and only one showed up on xray and that's cause I waited so long to go to the dr that it had already started healing and that's what showed up on the X-ray. That being said, if he thinks its peroneal, get to a good trigger point massage therapist, or ART specialist, that is the saving grace with my lower leg muscle issues, couldn't run without him!

description of pain sounds more like tendon than fracture however as others have said, stress fractures need an MRI to be seen.

regardless you need to not run so see how it feels

That's great KatieLimb. Although a couple of weeks off, it's at least not a stress fracture that would be months off.

Also, with the biking, I would recommend that you're not doing any high intensity, but keep everything low intensity. That way, you're minimizing the stresses and give yourself a path to faster recovery.

FELTGood - 2013-04-13 9:24 AM Actually, CT is typically better

usually for bone that is true but the orthopods here use MRI for stress fx
