Pre-race routine:

Got to bus at 5:45 to realize I had left my watch at home. Kate had to bring it to me in a hurry...clearly added a little adrenaline to the morning. Ate cold oats, ate a banana, had an apple, had a little crackers and that was it. Drank a tomato juice and some water with electrolytes.
Run
  • 4h 22m 36s
  • 2.2 miles
  • 1h 59m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Did ok for first 13-15 miles and was below the 10 min/mile pace...then slowly started to go up. At the hills, the pace spiked to the 11’s and I couldn’t seem to get back down to a decent pace. I really thought I could finish under the 10 min mark. I did run through an on/off hamstring cramp at mile 22-25 and was happy about that. Towards the end though, I started thinking that I train too much for it to hurt this much and for going so slow, then realized, I’m probably doing the bare minimum...if I want to go faster, I need to turn up the training a few notches and/or just watch the race.

I broke the race down into segments:

1-5: Took a gu and a salt tablet

5-10: Saw the Landry’s at mile 10. Stopped and took pictures and exchanged my water bottle. It was a big pick me up. Took a gu and a salt tablet

10-14: Took a gu and a salt tablet.

14-18: Took a gu and a salt tablet.

18-22: Took a gu and a salt tablet. Saw Leanne and Jason

22-24: I can't remember if I took a gu and a salt tablet as this is a daze.

24-26: Saw the Corliss family, but was cramping in my right hamstring, high up so had to keep running. Saw the Callaghans at 25.5 and went to say high...ran down the embankment and not more than 30 seconds later did I hear the first boom. A woman asked if that was supposed to happen. About 30 seconds later we heard the second boom and could see the smoke immediately and I could see from the police officer’s face that he thought it was bad. As I kept running, a police officer stopped us and told us the race is on hold. I was worried runners might stack up behind us, I was concerned it might be a biological or chemical bomb of some sort and hustled back to where the Callaghans were.

Overall, I wanted to be at a 10 min pace or better, but was at 10:22.

What hurts most?
Bottom of my right shin
Space behind my knees...from my achilles to my hams

Most Fun:
Seein Adam and his family at 10
Wellesley college girls: must have kissed 5 of them. Loved it
BC Campus, just yelled “let’s go Eagles”, and the crowd went crazy...never liked BC until yesterday

What would you do differently?:

#1 Speed work
#2 I think I need more miles...I feel like I was doing the bare minimum. I need to focus.
Post race
Warm down:

My race was halted at 25.83 when the bombs exploded. I heard the first one, but it didn't register. A woman asked aloud, "is that supposed to happen". Then I heard and saw the second one as I was about to hit Boylston. A police officer stopped me and told us the race was on hold, finished. We could see that the police were nervous, and that started to make us nervous.
Once I made it to the Callaghans, I just sat down and then walked back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to train harder / smarter.

Event comments:

I will definitley run the race next year...am not going to let the terrorists (or criminals or whomever) make us afraid.

Sorry that you were halted so close to the finish. But I guess it was a good thing that you weren't a couple of minutes faster.

In all of the reporting on the race, one thing that has struck me is how little attention there has been to the runners who didn't make it to the finish. At the end of a marathon a typical runner is entirely spent, perhaps a little confused, etc. They need water, warmth, and sometimes a little help to get around. I'm impressed that thousands of runners on Monday seem to have taken the situation in their stride so well.

I've been wondering the same thing.  The trains were shut down and most of those runners had nothing--no money, no warm clothes, no phone, and, like you said, totally spent.

Can anyone who was at Boston comment on this?

Thanks so much for reporting on this.  I am so happy you were not a bit faster!!  How many runners were still out?  How many marathons have been stopped in the middle?

I think that this is the first time I've ever even thought this, let alone said it... I'm glad you weren't any faster.  Glad you safe and i'm sure next year you'll crush the 10 m/m pace!

Congrats Brady. I know it was enormously stressful for the people who were stopped. My friend Tim was pulled off the course and we didn't hear from him for hours. I was still in the finishers chute, way too close for comfort.

I will BQ again and run again. What else can we do?

Well run race.

My heart breaks for those impacted by the bombings.  To be half a mile from the finish chute sucks--but from the looks of things you will BQ again and go back to unfinished business.  Good luck!!

I was there too.  However, I had finished the race about 30 minutes prior to the cowards attacks.

I am sorry your joy of completing Boston was torn from you but it sounds as if you were having a pretty decent race up until you were stopped.  I am glad you made it safely back home.

I will write my RR soon but I currently don't have the stomach or the heart to do so just yet.

Congrats on making it!  Hopefully you'll be there next year!

BTW, I have the same attitude.  If I were physically capable and not committed to head home I would have loved to have run the course again on Tuesday as an act of defiance to the terrorists!

Congrats on pretty much finishing Boston. So sorry that it had to end the way it did. Next year maybe only kiss 3 girls, you will save yourself some time.

I'm glad your family is safe. Very nice race report. I'm not yet ready to write mine. I ran 4:08:28, so that should tell you where I was when the bombs went off.

But I too will be back.

I'm so sorry you didn't get to finish, but as others have said, it's possibly for the best.

Great job!

In terms of what you would do differently, if I were you I would swap your #1 and #2. First work on the consistency and volume. Worry about the speed later.

Nice job! Sorry you didn't get to cross. I hope you can go again someday. Really glad you were not around when the bombs went off! I hope it was a grand experience!
